Blimey, a huge tranche of new stuff this week…

Oh Sees – Smote Reverser. Yes, there seems to be a constant stream of albums from these guys, but if you’re into their psych/garage sound, with a big dose of heavy prog and a pinch of metal this time round, this is pretty essential: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGXLsxUInvw

The Myrrors – Borderlands. Last album was panoramic, Morricone-inflected desert psych, this one is like a Tex-Mex version of In Search Of Space: https://themyrrors.bandcamp.com/album/borderlands

Evil Blizzard – The Worst Show On Earth. Hadn’t bothered with this lot before due to the novelty band look of them, but well, this is rather great, much more controlled and melodic than I’d assumed, but they certainly know when to bring the noise. And the singer sounds like Lemmy having finally managed to clear his throat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgGMe2wDH98

Regal Worm – Pig Views. Mad one-man prog magnum opus from bloke who used to be in I Monster. Really quite impressive in its none-more-prog way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epvk5xK6hbg

Nik Turner & Youth – Pharaohs From Outer Space. You can probably guess what this sounds like, only it’s a lot better than you’re thinking. In fact, it sounds pretty great if ambient/cosmic jazz odysseys are your thing: http://themusic.today/release/nik-turner-and-youth-pharaohs-from-outer-space/9410600

Sun Dial – Science Fiction. This didn’t do much for me, sounds like a series of half-worked up demo ideas than a proper album.

Melody’s Echo Chamber – Bon Voyage. Expected to like this more as well, but it sounds like somebody rifling through a hipster’s record collection circa 1998.

David Newlyn – Collected Fictions. More pleasant if not earth-shattering lo-fi ambient from the Sound In Silence label: https://soundinsilencerecords.bandcamp.com/album/collected-fictions

E – Negative Work

Alex Crispin – Open Submission

Rain Parade – Explosions In The Glass Palace. Hooray, I wired up an extra set of speakers to my amp, and this was what I tested it with. It goes without saying that anybody with ears should own and cherish this record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH_eqdxDCc4

Curved Air – Phantasmagoria. Re-release of third album from early 70s prog/art rock crew fronted by Sonja Kristina. Never heard much Curved Air before, but the one track of theirs that had stuck in my mind from seeing it on a Rock Of The 70s show as a teen is here, the slightly bonkers ‘Marie Antoinette’. There’s actually a lot of nice stuff here, but tonally and compositionally, it’s all over the place, from folky soft rock to Zeuhl-like freakouts, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that they’re usually seen as being on the sidelines of the prog canon… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W0Q0DucHYs
