"It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home.

"A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time."

EDIT: Looks legit. RIP-ah! :(

Maaan, that's put a pisser on the day. Here's hoping he's totally wired, doing a rowche rumble, somewhere near an industrial estate. RIP Mark, and thanks fer all the good times and memories. A genius and a poet, and he probably knew it-ah.

I'm genuinely saddened to hear this. I've been buying Fall records since I was in my teens and he has been a true-one off ever since. I shall always remember a friend and I having a post-gig drink with him a few years ago. What a fabulously hilarious and memorable experience that was. RIP MES. A true legend x

My favourite memory of him is when he tried to sneakily duck out through the door part of a painting of a house at the side of the stage about twenty-five minutes into the gig, banging his head in the process. Ended up playing for another hour in one of their best sets in years.

I bought records by The Fall in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's and saw them live in three of them decades. They were just always around and doing new stuff. Used to see MES in the pub in Embra regularly when he lived here. He was an honorary Edinburgh Man.
The only band/ person who equals that (and just beats it) is Copey who has the same 5 decades of record purchases and I've seen him live in four of them decades.
These decades in Britain would not have been as interesting and fun without such characters.
Cheers Mark. Julian... eat yer greens!
