Richard Youngs – Belief. Mr Youngs has apparently released 140 albums, and here he is with the next one, which is comparatively ‘straight’ – almost singer/songwriter – compared to some of his more experimental work. On saying that, even at his most obtuse, he’s always worth a listen, certainly compared to a lot of the avant crowd that The Wire likes to write about… Anyway, quite a bit of this is rather lovely, and his voice is just wonderful (Robert Wyatt fans in particular might want to bend an ear to this if you don’t know RY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yosxqxGHCus )

Jozef van Wissem – Nobody Living Can Ever Make Me Turn Back. Supremely gloomy, lutes are well goth innit. (I have literally no idea what’s going on in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgxm60Ue8Fo )

Death And Vanilla – The Tenant. Alternative soundtrack/Ghost Box-lite territory. Have seen various people rave about these guys, but I couldn’t find much to get too excited about here: https://deathandvanillamusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-tenant

Ouzo Bazooka – Songs From 1001 Nights. This might essentially be a modern updating of that Anatolian psych/Erkin Koray sound, but it is still nicely rocking: https://ouzobazooka.bandcamp.com/album/songs-from-1001-nights

Gwenno – Le Kov. Better on second listen, even if she does get a bit Enya in places.

James Holden & The Animal Spirits – s/t. Did a great looking show in my neck of the woods the other night. I managed to miss it…

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Polygondwandaland. Nothing else really matches that fantastic opening track, but they’ve got an interesting psych prog sound going on here.

Listen With Father:

Highlights from the compilation this week…

Boston – ‘More Than A Feeling’. Frankly, AOR could have started and stopped here. Just a perfect song, and that high note towards the end… Jesus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSR6ZzjDZ94 (Only recently realised that those flying saucers on the cover are actually guitars… doh!)

Judas Priest – ‘Diamonds And Rust’. If proof we needed that the Priest were always far more than just another metal band, there’s this utterly magnificent Joan Baez cover. Galloping pop rock perfection, and an incredible performance from Rob Halford. Remember listening to this as a pre-teen, and wondering what on earth it might be about… Baez loved it apparently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLDazyvMMGw

Standing out this week were...

Head of David - White Elephant. Wonderful band that stood out like a sore thumb at the time. Woulda/coulda been the start of the NWONWOBHM. Birmingham band. Imagine Judas Priest with insane abstract sound sculpturing KK Downing as the sole guitarist and an almost Jim Morrison style crooner as the singer... ish. I've promised to stick a review on the (now-sadly-neglected) Unsung section here, so I'd better leave something to say . Their first album genuinely changed my life. Very odd. Listen to this, A scorched earth Mamas and Papas song, for these end times that the global consciousness seems to be willing into existence.

Johnny Jenkins - Ton Ton Macoute! Gosh. This is good. 1970. His backing band later abandoned him and became the Allman Brothers. They honestly never hit these heights on their own. Nobody told me! This is so, so good! Straight-up. Spoken with the zeal of someone who only came across it yesterday admittedly. However, listen to this and tell me I'm wrong...

Sampled to fuck by Beck, Soul II Soul, Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan etc. Any others spotted gratefully acknowledged.

Well over a week of the bone dry, static electricity and wildfire filled devil winds made me dig out much Steely Dan. Particularly enjoyable, in this weather, are the cocaine overproduced albums like Countdown to Ecstasy and The Royal Scam. No rain in the forecast, just more fires in the foreseeable future.

Guilty as charged guvnor!. I do love the band, but gotta be honest, I'm not a massive fan of D & V's 'soundtrack' stuff. They did another called Vampyr which was for (I think?) a screening of Nosferatu or somesuch. Picked it up on initial release on cassette. Think it only got played the once, and I can't even find the tape as I write.

I would recommend the 1st EP, debut album and recentish album proper, 'To Where The Wild Things Are' tho.

ep - https://deathandvanillamusic.bandcamp.com/album/ep
debut - https://deathandvanillamusic.bandcamp.com/album/death-and-vanilla
To Where...https://deathandvanillamusic.bandcamp.com/album/to-where-the-wild-things-are

Bit like early Raveonettes, They are a bit of a one trick pony soundwise, but it's a trick that works fer me :)

Funnily enough, I was kicking myself fer missing Jane Weaver at the end of Nov. Had it in mind the whole time, and on the night, bloody forgot. Was only 12 quid too! Bah Humbug!!!!!!

Cheers, will have another listen.

In fairness, I couldn't have got to the James Holden gig even if I'd known about it. Similar story re Jane Weaver's London date the other month. But was really pissed off to discover that I'd managed to miss Chris Forsyth and The Solar Motel Band in August at The Shacklewell Arms - first time they'd played in London I think...

I must confess I had never heard Vampyr until it was re-issued this year. Whilst I would stop short of saying its as good as their own 'proper' releases I've got to say I think it's very good!
