First Record of the Weekend 05.05.2017.

Something I've been doing for a while on The Book of Face and Twatter is my First Record of the Weekend - the first noise I blast out when the weekend starts. It occurred to me this might be fun to share on here - perhaps a brother (or sister) thread to STOOL. What are you annoying the neighbours with when you crack open your first beer of the weekend?

Here's mine this week:

First record of the weekend is the Cosmic Dead's "Psych Is Dead" LP on Riot Season - Psych appears to be dead in a head-banging-zombie-on-acid sort of way. Which is OK by me. Weekend here I come.

I'm going to have to give the Cosmic Dead another listen. I'm only really familiar with the first (excellent) album and their 'Live at the Trades' release, which I actually mixed as a matrix of 3 seperate recordings, and therefore heard about 30 times...

anyway, mine was 'Live at the Witch Trials' by the Fall, which sent me into a suitably belligerent/paranoid mood for a night in Todmorden.

Splendid! I've been listening to quite a lot of The Fall lately after a friend mentioned binging on them to the extent of not wanting to listen to anything else.

Edit: and the Cosmic Dead's Rainbowhead album is a total monster - I love it.

Yep, The Fall sometimes grab me like that, and it's like being unpleasantly drunk and od'd on nasty speed to boot. Wonder why that might be, psychic (dancehall) osmosis maybe.

Playing the first show of the new Grateful Dead box. 5/5/77 New Haven.

Now I bought this on a whim, I've never really liked the Dead before, but I've only heard a few of their studio recordings, and of course they were a predominantly live band. This box includes 4 shows, including the "legendary" 5/8/77 Cornell show. I figured that if I liked these highly regarded (even among non-Deadheads) shows, then maybe I would check out some other releases as well.

So far, it's pretty good. I don't know any of the songs, so I can't tell what variations are going on, but the jamming is quite good. My only real complaint is Bob Weir's "singing". Fuck me, he has a horrible voice. I mean Jerry wasn't exactly a songbird, but at least he had a nice sound. Bob sounds like someone is stepping on his chest. Why oh why did they let him sing so many songs?

Anyway, either I'll end up being a convert, or I'll end up selling it.

If you dig the Dead circa '77, check this out, thanks to the ever-reliable and eccentric BigO -
