A big week or so for new releases... I can't remember getting so many new releases in one week! Short Fuse - Akatombo More dark industrial noises from the ever reliable Akatombo. Just Say No To The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine - Gnod I heard the hypnotic closing track in a Manchester record shop and just had to get it. Well the end of it is hypnotic. Elsewhere there's some pretty cool noisy stuff. Silver Eye - Goldfrapp A return to Black Cherry type electronic pop. I love the opening Anymore. Damage & Joy – JAMC The JAMC return as if Darklands was yesterday. I'm not saying it's a classic or anything but it is very enjoyable. Silver/Lead – Wire Released more or less on the 40th anniversary of the bands first gig, S/L has lots of strong material albeit that much of it is one paced. One of those cases where you wonder if you would have thought this yourself had one of the band not made that point before you heard it? Also.. Expanding Dub 12” - Bill Callahan S/T – Death & Vanilla Transmission - Death In Vegas Life Is People – Bill Fay Who Is The Sender – Bill Fay The Invisible Way – Low If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears – The Mama's & Papa's Magnetic Seasons – Mugstar Frontline – Nightdubbing Presents El Rockers Chapters I-IV 12” - Augustus Pablo Burning The Threshold – Six Organs Of Admittance The Albums Collection Boxset – T.Rex All the albums from T.Rex (1970) to the Dandy In The Underworld finale (1977) plus 2 bonus discs. VU – Velvet Underground Slow & So It Grows (CDS) - Wir Trojan Dub Box Set Volume 2 – V/A

Dream Machine – The Illusion. Lots of new things this week, pretty much all of it great. The Illusion consists of 11 crowd-pleasing vintage-style organ-heavy psych rock tracks over 35 minutes, a bit like Iron Butterfly on steroids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKLTcsnBNZA Hey Colossus – The Guillotine. Loved their last psych/kraut-leaning album, this one reverts to arty noise rock type, albeit more accessible than their earlier stuff. Interesting, but I remain a bit undecided on first listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNsU3l3kiJU Woods – Love Is Love. Builds on the Ethiopian jazz and Afro-beat influences of their last album, but feels more at ease with them. They’re coming from a folky roots rock direction, which is not usually my thing, but there’s a real melodic clarity to their sound which I find weirdly affecting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgmdgMm9h6k Dead Sea Apes – Sixth Side Of The Pentagon. Post-punk dub rock, perfect for driving around unfamiliar parts of north London at night (which is how I listened to it): https://deadseaapes.bandcamp.com/album/sixth-side-of-the-pentagon Do Make Say Think – Stubborn Persistent Illusions. Dreadfully named Canadian post-rock veterans return. Always been slightly in the shadow of GYBE, but this is impressive stuff that’s buzzing with musical ideas: https://domakesaythink.bandcamp.com/album/stubborn-persistent-illusions Hisko Detria - Mal Du Siècle. Finnish krauty psych types, a nice ‘what the hell’ attitude, but a bit taxing at times. Some fine Can homage here though: https://soundcloud.com/svart-records/hisko-detria-vitamin-e Michael Moorcock & The Deep Fix – New World’s Fair. A strange outlier in the Hawkwind catalogue. It features various members, with Simon House’s keys and fiddle particularly prominent, but it’s Moorcock’s peculiarly operatic voice that makes the biggest impression. The music is a mix of campy Bolan/Bowie and Stonesy country rock, and probably not that appealing to the average HW fan (then or now), but as rock oddities go, it’s actually quite accomplished, with a couple of genuinely decent tracks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTbKezH_Gr4 Listen With Father: Stealing Sheep – Into The Diamond Sun. I regularly catch my daughters singing ‘Shut Eye’ to themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeUEUT2NtG0 The Stranglers – various singles. What an odd band the Stranglers were/are. Stuck this on Spotify while playing Uno with the youngest, inspired by seeing their amusing performance of ‘No More Heroes’ on one of those TOTP comps that constitute a good portion of the BBC4 schedule. They get lumped into the punk scene, but they seem to offer a window onto something else entirely, where art rock meets pub rock – self-consciously naughty, but subversively strange. I know very little other than the singles, should clearly investigate further one of these days… Live: School Of Rock, New London Theatre. So, the soundtrack to (agghh, can’t believe I’m writing these words) Andew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical is what’s actually been getting the most rotation in the car. And it’s really good, as is the show. The kids loved watching the child stars rocking out (as the recorded voice of ALW points out at the start, they do indeed play their own instruments), and it certainly beats friggin’ Cats. The big song is just about perfect (and surprisingly sweary): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5JAQGUyIPE
