Childish Gambino-Awaken My Love

Donald Glover's music any good? Really loved Atlanta and his work on Community but never got it together to listen to Childish Gambino before.

Anyway, listenin' to the all-lesbian cumbia group Kumbia Queers (didn't really have to say the all-lesbian cumbia part, what with it being in the name and all) and their great/ridiculous cover of Iron Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PWno0aC1_I

I don't really care for hip hop (his other albums), but this album is not hip hop. It's a perfect blend of Sly/Clinton/Bootsy/Stevie 70s loose funk and R&B with so many twists and turns. I've only played it once (just bought it today) but I can already say I love it. Totally blew me away.

Is that Donald singing?? If it really is, then nothing I've ever seen him do has ever indicated he could find such a smooth falsetto. Actually, there was that Glee club-parody episode of Community where he acquitted himself well, but still. I'm thinking that has to be a guest singer. Even if he's just producing the whole thang, loved that, man. Am 100% getting that album, as I'm always down for some new funky thangs. Also really dug Me And Your Mama which auto-played straight afterwards.

God, you've gotta lay back in awe when you see someone like him hitting such a creative stride in so many areas at once. Prometheus unbound.

Yeah, he's singing, and playing, and writing and producing. I wouldn't have picked it up normally, but I read that it was amazing.

Cheers for the mention. I wouldn't write off hip-hop altogether, by the way. I feel like the naive, boundary-pushing spirit of psychedelia, as opposed to its more dirgey side, can often be found in the newest hip-hop; the spirit which made one-offs like Caledonia and White Noise and Journey in Satchidananda. If even Kanye does things like sample King Crimson, then think what the more savvy beatsmiths in the field can come up with!

Admittedly, I need a bit of a refresher myself, as I drenched myself in the Cloud Rap scene of a couple of years ago then took a bit of a musical hiatus in general, but I know from conversations and chance soundwaves that the pot is still bubbling.

(Now playing Godz Radar Eyes).

I won't say I'll never listen to hip hop, but just thus far most of it hasn't grabbed me like other genres do. I grew up listening to thrash metal and early rap (as it was called in the 80s), but when gangsta rap started coming up, it turned me off the whole thing. It's hard for me to tell now what a quality hip hop album would be. I've heard some Kanye and thought it was decent, but heard other stuff of his and thought it was complete garbage. Kind of like my opinion of the Grateful Dead, most of what I've heard I've hated, but there were a couple of okay songs.

I'd be willing to check out some recommendations, old or new. As long as it isn't ICP or Lil Wayne.

Haha. Glad you said that about the Dead and not me, though I'm right there with you. Will see what I can do when I get home.

Not gonna make it home so I'll just give a few names off the top off my head. I tend to be into Hip-Hop outsiders, truth by told, so you may find some of these a bit annoying, but Insane bloody Clown Posse they ain't!

Divine Styler released Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light in 1992, which was thee most psychedelic and bizarre hip-hop curio to ever see the light of day at the time (wasn't that around the same time of the Fresh Prince and the like? Hard to imagine). It had everything from protracted Prince-like Rnb jams to completely feral industrial noise-fests like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18bMtR-7q3Y

Edan's Beauty & The Beat is superlative psychey De La Soul-esque fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DK8TkP0DzM&t=56s

Here's an Aussie hip-hop group who worked magic with this Comus sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A-8DgWQlV4

There are tons of lovely, slinky jazzy hip-hop groups like Freestyle Fellowship, Busdriver, Mike Ladd.

DJ Screw released a kazillion disorientating ketaminified "chopped and screwed" tapes while he was alive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_h55O66uf0

Could never like Kanye after he actually wrote the line, "Keeping it 300 like the Romans", but he did do some nice industrially experiments. Not gonna recommend him, however, when cats like Dalek (something from their collaboration with Faust: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3fRL5TZv4M), Moor Mother (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asYtTRfkbn8) and Clipping (latest album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpXiEb2KVoY) do it so much better.

Main Attrakionz release tons of odd dream-like mixes. The track Eternal Mono is built on a great Cluster sample. Think it might be something from Zuckerzeit? https://lwhmusic.bandcamp.com/track/eternal-mono-ft-main-attrakionz-max-von-sydow

Naturally the Czechs make some great, eerie Svankmajer-esque rap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46LAavZ9efw&list=PLVrZC1zkkvwqyr6mZ5fofJbZMDL4UnLNz

Being the unbridled weeaboo I am, I would be remiss if I didn't mention some Japanese hip-hop. Moe & The Ghosts are the best I've heard from the isles of Nippon in that regard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EpVX3BIen8

Will leave it there but I do think hip-hop is a ridiculously broad church that anyone can worship at.

Thanks mate. Will listen with open ears. I find myself in a constant search for music that blows me away, while still enjoying the mind-blowing tracks of yore.

Also recently took a serious bend into the world of "Temple of Bon Matin". What a fucking trip! That Ed Wilcox has a wiiiiide range of muses, and you never really know which direction the next song is going to take. Bullet Into Mesmers Brain is particularly mind melting.

Mustard - Good Time Coming - bit of a glam stomper from 1973-ish. Fucking great.
