Robert Wyatt's cover of 'Strange Fruit'.
A 'middle class white man' shouldn't carry this off so well, but he does.
Even though a white man wrote it.
Nina Simone totally owns Dylan's 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues', The Beatles' 'Revolution' and Randy Newman's 'Baltimore'.
Turns them all on their heads.
She of course does 'Strange Fruit', which exudes with pain, anger, defeat, and defiance all at once, and that voice just pins you where you happen to be.
But Wyatt's version remains my favourite.
