Leaving sampling, plagiarism and sheer money-grabbing opportunism aside.... I reckon cover versions are a valid way of setting an artist's work in context with their influences. Or plugging that hole in that song writing block? My starter for 10: 1) Have a Cigar - John Foxx 2) Respect - Dexys 3) Rock n'Roll Pt2 (I think, never can remember)/ You've Lost That Loving Feeling .... both need a mention - early Human League 4) Police & Thieves - The Clash 5) The More I See You - OMITD 6) Goldfinger - Magazine 7) Always on my Mind - Pet Shop Boys 8) Can't Get Used To Losing You - The Beat 9) The Meaning of Love - Marsheaux 10)5 o'clock World - the wondrous Mr Cope. Although no doubt he thinks it's shite nowadays. Oh, one more: 11) Tainted Love - Soft Cell |
