Fatalist wrote: Whoa, thanks ;-) Coil in particular are one of those bands I probably need to become better acquainted with - bought Horse Rotovator when it came out, had a couple of listens, then filed it away. But the reverence with which they're treated these days suggests I might have missed something....
The thing is, for me, early Coil up to say 'Loves Secret Domain', and the later incarnations are almost totally different bands musicaly. Like yourself, Horse Rotorvator was the inroad for me (an album I played to death back in 86/87 and still cherish and revere to this day. The later stuff embraces their influences and dare I say feminine sides a little more. Just like Cope, Thighpaulsandra was a shot in the arm for mid to later period Coil, he took them places they probably hadn't considered musically.
Albums like 'Musick To Play In the Dark' Vols: 1 & 2 was described as 'lunar musics' at the time, and it definately has a different feel to those early recordings, maybe more reflective in nature. They still experimented with sound ana structure (Check out Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil for fullon power electronics) but also embraced more traditional songwriting techniques and instrumentation too.
Anyhoo, for my two pee worth, here's a few I'd recommend. Astral Disaster and Moons Milk Bonus CDr are firm favs, but there's a link to them above, so I won't include it here).

Another album worth tracking down is a 2002 live show in St.John's Church Gdansk...great performance.
And finally, and perhaps the most poignant performance, their final gig in Dublin. :(
