Stevo wrote: Nobody rushed out and bought these then? Would be interested in hearing what they're like. There was an interesting thing on the sources somebody posted elsewhere http://www.gandsmusic.com/ZappaCD1.htm Shame there isn't another one for the next batch, I'm most interested in the Bitches Brew influenced stuff from '72 & '73 & Overnight Sensation possibly Apostrophe. Having got the old Rykos of the mid 60s Mothers stuff. So i'm interested in overall sound. Has compression etc been kept to reasonable levels etc. Stevo Got the Were Only In It for the money which incidentally I felt was quite appropriate regarding Zappa's estate.. Sadly a missed opportunity as there seems to be no schedule for vinyl additions..

I think that keeps the mix from the previous cd doesn't it? Or does it sound any different? Really does seem to be a weird mix of what has been tampered with decades afterwards and what has come from the original masters according to that link I provided above. They haven't appeared in this town yet so I was unable to check for myself. I'm assuming Zappa is considered a big enough artist for HMV to get his material in. People have said that Zappa added a lot of reverb to the Ryko cds so those of these that have the same overall mixes would sound different to some degree. Not sure if it would be something you'd notice. Stevo

I've now heard HOt rats and Weasels Ripped My Flesh. I thought HR would have a heavier presence. You can certainly hear every note of every instrument played ok but I think I was expecting more bass oomph. HAven't heard the lp in years though I don't think. Packaging is the gatefold sleeve reproduced as a 4 folded cd booklet with credits but no real linernotes. Might have expected a historical essay or something but no. Weasels seems to have pretty great sound and a very slight cd booklet, again with credits but no liner notes so it looks like something from about 20 years ago. Odd now that getting a critic or historian to do liners in most reissues seems the norm. Maybe it supposedly speaks for itself? Anyway, looks ok, sounds pretty good and I guess whatever histories can be read elsewhere? Lead off track on Weasels has been dropped back down to original length, same with Gumbo Variations on HR. MORE TIME TO FREAK OUT! FRANK ZAPPA’S ENTIRE ORIGINAL CATALOG AVAILABLE ON iTUNES AUGUST 14 SO BEGINS FIRST LEGAL, AUTHORIZED DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION OF LEGENDARY COMPOSER’S MUSIC For the first time ever, the entire original (from the Barking Pumpkin label) catalog of the music of legendary American composer FRANK ZAPPA will be available--legally and as authorized by the ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST--on iTunes. Sixty masters (comprising 56 albums) in the deal between the ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST and UNIVERSAL MUSIC ENTERPRISES are now available through iTunes. The August 14 iTunes roll-out follows the physical release of the first 12 CDs as part of this UME deal. While the CDs have all been retransferred, 21 titles have been re-mastered for the re-launch, yes-and-but also including the iTunes releases; yes, that's right, for the digital distribution known as MFiT: Mastered For iTunes. Every single title will feature art and online content for each and every iTunes release. The list of both the physical CDs and iTunes releases available July 31 is below. Following the July 31 releases, another dozen physical CD recordings will be released each month for 5 months through November 2012. “We are especially pleased to note the timing--that FZ was the first to bring Voter Registration to the concert hall and since 1971 when the 18-year old vote was passed he included the admonition to REGISTER & VOTE on every album he released. Well, his work is back the way he intended it and on each recording you will find his music, the source, the year of release and how old he was when he made it--and the simplest of nods to his love for the idea of Democracy,” says Gail Zappa. “Of course, as he also said, “Music is the Best!’” Meanwhile back in Hollywood where dreams sometimes DO come true, Frank Zappa is back where he belongs--on Zappa Records--in the hands of the Zappa Family Trust--headed by Zappa’s widow Gail Zappa--the releases will honor the iconic legacy of the Composer, Guitarist, Bandleader, Filmmaker and Wit. ZAPPA was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 (although the family would like to know where it is--does anyone have any information???). The official biography: Frank Zappa, American composer, fl. 1940-1993. The UME deal is for the entire Zappa Catalog as it appeared on Frank Zappa's own independent label, Barking Pumpkin Records. Many of the original analog masters have been re-mastered for this occasion. Yes that's right, you heard right. The albums made available on iTunes July 31, released in chronological order: 1. Freak Out! (1966) 2. Absolutely Free (1967) 3. Lumpy Gravy (1967) 4. We're Only In It For The Money (1968) 5. Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (1968) 6. Uncle Meat (1969) 7. Hot Rats (1969) 8. Was just coming over to post the remaster titles from reading this list elsewhere. Note the absence of Hot Rats since it is merely the cd of a 2008 vinyl reissue mastering. Rather than a fresh mastering for this series anyway. & people elsewhere are bewailing Roxy & Elsewhere not being one of the remasters. Think it might have been one of the ones I would have grabbed. I wasn't impressed at all by the new 2012 reissues...CD's are stuck within a 24 kHz paradigm...you can only polish a turd so many times...24/96 Vinyl is the way to go...24/96 Digital is already happening...Zappa's: jump on that fucking bandwagon...release ALL the vault live shows, especially the Y.C.D.T.O.S.A set...Vinyl Cope's next release should be the 'Black Sheep' album, as double 24/96 Digital FLAC files...I'd buy it!
