I was going to post a link to Lowery's essay and then thought better of it as I figured I would get dragged into an artist's rights versus hark-the-freetard-angels-sing spat.
All I will say is that many of the voices who advocated free as a way of doing business in the arts are getting quieter as labels fold. Of the self promoters and bloggers the ones that most effectively used the debate to get themselves a profile are now getting jobs at places like Live Nation as new media advisors. Even the venerable Lefsetz shills for Rhino/Warner while banging the Spotify drum.
Other than Apple who has benefitted more from the collapse of the record business than the behemoths of the concert promotion business?
