Recent-ish news is not sounding good. http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2011/12/dave_thomas_rocket_from_the_tombs_pere_ubu_interview.php Village Voice wrote: Pere Ubu will never end. I am already grooming my replacement in the band. The plan is that he will be taking over in approximately five years, or sooner if he makes more rapid progress in terms of songwriting. Can you elaborate on the "replacement" you are grooming to take your place in Pere Ubu? Who is he or she? Not saying yet. Will you continue to write songs for Pere Ubu after you leave the band? Maybe. But when I go I anticipate the replacement will do the writing. I will continue as producer for an interim period. David Thomas appears to have lost a lot of weight recently. He refuses to comment on his health. The Ubuprojex diary for 2012 makes grim reading showing that more than half the May tour was canceled due to ill health. There are but two further events scheduled for September and nothing more this year. He advises that he is already grooming a replacement for his position in the band.

Weird. He still plays here locally sometimes in Hove. Just hops onstage with local bands. I saw him a year or so back and he looked alright to me. He was still a big man, though. I've heard that suddenly losing a lot of weight after spending most of your life huge can take a huge toll on your body. I think it might have been what did in a friend of mine who died at the beginning of this year. :( I guess the fact that Pere Ubu still exist in some form forty years after Rocket From the Tombs is still something to be appreciated. I don't think I've heard anyone talk about A Ghost Town Goes Where You Want to Go from last year, which is strange, as you'd still expect some residual interest in a new Ubu release. EDIT: Ohright, that's a live album. No wonder.

I saw DT walking in the Lanes of Brighton 2 or so months ago, he has lost a lot of weight. He was using 2 sticks, moving very slowly and didn't look at all good. I hope the new album "Lady From Shanghai" is good, after a great hit-rate Why I Hate Women just didn't do it for me despite repeated listens. I hope DT gets back to good health very soon. Pere Ubu - one of the best!

He's only 59 and these recent clips seems to betray a degree of frailty in both his voice and his personal manner that I've not seen before ... comes across a little older than his years. Just the other week I became aware of, and have ordered, the limited hardback edition of his new book http://www.ubuprojex.net/ubutique.html#bohbook . Also awaiting the new album with eager anticipation! I've been holding off on buying any of the exclusive mp3 downloads on Ubuprojex, hoping that they'll get around to issuing a lossless format. Of all of the things available it's 'Mirror Man Act II' that has me most interested.

Of all of the things available it's 'Mirror Man Act II' that has me most interested. As I posted above, when I saw him in the street he didn't look at all good. I'm surprised to read he's only 59. That's younger than me (not by much!) and a lot younger than my dad who looks far healthier (can't sing though, so unlikely to be groomed for succession - see a previous link). I've looked at a load of recent youtube stuff, and as you say his voice has become very much weaker - especially noticeable on the RFTT stuff. There's a book reading 27th July in Brighton limited to 30 attendees. http://www.ubuprojex.net/calendar.html Might be the last chance to see him. Unfortunately have other commitments that would make me unpopular if I abandoned them so I can't do that. I am too looking forward to the new album. Mirror Man 11 would be great. I've paid for a few of the live downloads from ubuprojex, glad to donate the money but they've not be listened to more than once.

Brighton would be quite a pilgrimage from up here in the East Midlands. Will have to give that some fairly fast consideration before it sells out. On the subject of the mp3 format downloads: http://www.hearpen.com/technical.html "It's clear that the only MP3 encoding method that can yield adequate results is an interleaved stereo file encoded at a Constant Bit Rate of 320kbps. This yields the largest possible file sizes but also allows for audio reproduction comparable to a vinyl pressing". Now, be clear on this point, "vinyl quality" is, in Ubu-speak, a derisive expression. "Gee, that sounds as good as vinyl" is another way of saying, "Gee, that sounds like a dog's dinner." Yeah, thanks for that. Most frustrating.
