O.V. Wright - Memphis Unlimited O.V. Wright - The Complete Vol. 1: In the Studio O.V. Wright - The Soul Of O.V. Wright My favourite of Willie Mitchell's collaborators. He didn't have the range of voices that Al Green had, or that ability to make the hundreds of hours Green spent working on a vocal sound off-the-cuff, and he also came to Hi-Records a little late in the day, but an emotive connection with the songs he can't be beat. The musicians sound like they enjoyed every minute they worked with him and the early 70s recordings are among my favourite rock / soul sessions that stand their ground next to both the Al Green and Ann Peebles catalogues as well as the best of the 68-74 Stones' and Rod recordings. Not bad company that. Various - Hi Records: Royal Memphis Soul Over time this has probably ended up being my favourite "various artists" cd box set. Four cds. Five hours. Put it on shuffle and you've got something approaching the greatest radio station in the world. Of it's kind only the 1970 5xlp Motown Story vinyl box is as consistently jaw-dropping. Miles Davis - Isle of Wight A big f*ck you from Miles to .... well pretty much everyone. Given the sheer size of the crowd, the rest of the bill and the end-of-an-era context this performance (also subject of a brilliant dvd) should be as iconic as Hendrix at Woodstock or Dylan at Newport. That it isn't is proof that Miles knew he was fighting a rear guard against closed minds. Radical electric chamber music where every phrase protests against cultural stupidty. Storm Corrosion Really don't know yet. One of those records that thus far isn't matching my predisposition to enjoy it. Getting a bit worn down by Steve Wilson's world view and musical bag o tricks. Then again I didn't much like the Hogarth / Barbieri, TMV or Spiritualized records either. Hopefully it is a grower but the law of diminishing prog returns seems to be kicking in. Now ... where's that copy of "Godbluff"? Stones - Black and Blue Session (Black and Blue sessions and out takes) Memphis relocated to Rotterdam and Munich. You can't beat the raw crunch of Fender Rhodes, organ and guitar especially on the karaoke mix of Slave. Preston and Hopkins are wonderful weaving in and out of each other and is that really Jeff Beck content to play simple lead rather than fast clusters? Maybe. Maybe not. Sounds too Keef-like to be Beck but whoever it is it's fantastic. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Hard Promises Elvis & the Attractions - Almost Blue (39 track version) Joe Ely - Honky Tonk Masquerade The Clash - Sandinista (16 tk - one cd version) Stones - Some Trax (Some Girls sessions and out takes)

Blimmin loads of good stuff, I'm bound to miss some out... Dragontears - 2000 Micrograms From Home Listened to this a lot lately. Earth - Angels of Darkness Demons of Light II Jon Porras - Black Mesa Both these albums put me in mind of desicated desert - like a John Wayne film or summat. Stackridge - Purple Spaceships Over Yatton (Best Of) Steely Dan - The Royal Scam Edgar Froese - Solo Brian Eno - Appolo Dragonforce - The Power Within (hahaha!) Sun Araw/Congos - Icon Give Thank I like this, but it does have a tendancy to sound like two seperate bands recording in two seperate rooms. Ty Segal & White Fence Great stuff. Young blokes get stoned and have a rockin time in the studio. Geoff barrow/Ben Salisbury - Drokk I like this, but I'm not sure it lives up to all the hype. It's a bit one dimensional. Also, the "bonus tracks" of the special edition seem to be lesser versions of ones already included. Meh. Carlton Melton - aQ Hits My favourite thing this week I think. Really great blast of rock. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless I used to really like it, but to my ears this hasn't aged well, despite the shiny remastering. I'd forgotten how much like Curve et al this sounds. Disappointing. John Martyn - In Session & Live At Leeds Deluxe Out of these, In Session seems suprisingly superior. I'd forgotten how sweary and leary he is on L.A.L - obviously a bit out of it and nervy and over-compensating. The versions on In Session sound far better and more relaxed. Dead Sea Apes - Astral House and Lupus Two great releases from the ape chaps. The Heads - Enten Eller More rocking greatness, only just pipped by the Carlton Melton. White Hills - Frying on the Rock, Gnod Drop Out With Top. Very top. Teeth of the Sea - Your Mercury This is revealing more detail with every listen. A fine record. Tlaotlon - Squirt Image Flex Truly psychedelic, a really mind expanding technoish loopy thing.

Disappointing. Have you listened to both discs of this yet? Saw comment elsewhere that it seemed that it had been mislabeled and it does seem like disc 1 is warmer and more likely to be the disc from analogue source. I certainly like it a lot more than the other version. Was actually surprised by the other version since it seemed to replicate problems I had had with the earlier cd and had thought I maybe had a faulty disc. Am enjoying the st disc quite a bit actually. Getting lost in the sound in some places. Stevo np Jim Ford Harlan County Spoonful great swamp stuff.

I have listened to both, but not closely enough to really compare accurately.

Also, the "bonus tracks" of the special edition seem to be lesser versions of ones already included. Meh. might give this a miss then, was impressed with what I heard but not sure it would stand repeated listening if it doesn't vary much this weeks listening has included Iron Maiden - Powerslave seems to be regarded as top tier Maiden but I whhilst I like it bar Ancient Mariner it's not their best IMHO Culture Club- Colour By Numbers & a bunch of singles nice tunes but it's let down by it's wimpiness , bugger all bottom end [snigger] and generally a bit faux soul Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs Ramones - Ramones Parson Sound - Parson Sound epic swedish VU alikes, never quite sure if they sound like VU because they had heard them or had similar influences, also listened to the Trad Gras och Stenar Gardet live set, stunning stuff Free Live, Pink Fairies Finland Freakout - suitable followups to Trad Gras Och Stenar Earthless - Live At Roadburn jamtastic , like Mountain with the songs removed, cut the crap and just jam for an hour and a half, I suspect Earthless realise that can't write a decent song so they just lay down a beat and get the guitarist to solo like a cross between Iommi and Blackmore at their widdly wankest, not for the faint hearted or anyone with taste really Cheap Trick - Live at the Budokan Moon of Ostara - The Star Child Earthling Society - Sci - fi Hi - fi Star Child is amazing, well worth a punt folks, but Sci-fi Hi-fi has really blown me away this week, sounding at times like Rick Wakeman has joined Neu! and the final 20 min track covers just about every base possible in a magnificent fashion, will be getting more playtime this week Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell nigh on perfect IMHO Crippled Black Phoenix - I,Vigilante Bowie - Ziggy Stardust another nigh on perfect listen Luxuria - Beast Box Devoto on top form, still getting my head round the 2nd album but it's growing on me Ennio Morricone - A fistful of sounds White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan Skyrim - OST

Don't let me put you off Drokk - everyone else seems to really like it, so maybe I just haven't been in the mood yet, I've only listened a couple of times so far. Really agree re SciFi HiFi, for me it is the Earthlings finest. Splendid album.
