With the 3 new My Bloody Valentine cd remaster sets having just been released I realize that there's quite a lot of material from before then that hasn't been collected.
The E.p.s compi starts with You Made Me Realize. There were earlier recordings by the same line-up as well as an earlier, somewhat different direction featuring the Irish half of the band.
Is any of this stuff worth seeking out or likely to be rereleased, or has it all been disowned as outside the MBV canon?
Most of the early stuff is awful Psychobilly material, or the first 12" is (as far as I can tell from the bootleg I have...) The whole deal with the plastic goth-Elvis routine which is so boring. A later record and they try to be a cross between a garage-band and the Gun Club, which only sounds good on paper really. (Personally I'd rather go for the original GC...)
Only the Geek mini album could be described as rockabilly. The pre-creation eps are all fantastically noisy indie, like the pastels with extra feedback. Incidently picked up a copy of the eps collection only to see a greengrocer's apostrophe on the spine describing it as an ep's collection. Typical, Kevin Shields spends years putting back the release of the remasters because he is obsessing over every note and drum beat and, we were told, the sleevnotes, and he doesn't spot a rogue apostrophe. Perfectionist my arse.
