Actually that fits pretty well. Dolenz (the Monkee "drummer") has stated that Davy had a better sense of rhythm and should have been the drummer all along (Micky would have rather played guitar.) Similarly, Tork's main instrument was keyboards but they made him the bassist.

Thus:

Mr. Showman, the class clown: Micky/Paul

The Take-No-Shit Bossman: Mike/Gene

The Stoned Guy Who Gets One Song Per Album: Peter/Ace

The Guy With Rhythm Who Sings The Ballads: Davy/Peter
