Vig is far from my favorite -- but he definitely produced a "signature sound" (the architect of early 90's "grunge"). And that makes him a "great producer" in my book.

Vig's sound was "heavy" yet still pop. (Maybe he is just Mutt Lange for college kids!)

He did the only listenable Smashing Pumpkins records, some pretty decent Sonic Youth albums, and that "Nevermind" record was OK too.
