I used to think of them more as "Springsteen-lite" than anything having to do with punk - though in America, they were considered pretty avant-garde by the mainstream as much because their keyboard player wore pajamas than anything else. Never liked them much, as they always seemed to play it pretty safe in order to break America, as if Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson had crossed some sort of line. (Which may have been a reasonable bet in 1978, I guess, but seems really weak now.) They did a ska-lite version of "Under My Thumb," which says it all, IMO.
