Exactly! All good art/music is self indulgent in some way and I don't know how you can do idiosyncratic and eccentric without that quality. Otherwise it is just fake / formula.
I bought at the time to hear what he was doing with the bass and was therefore a bit non plussed as he has a very different sound with the band.
