I am not the biggest Stranglers fan aside from the first album but have been really enjoying JJ Burnel's "Euroman Cometh" after seeing it in Hunter T Wolfe's Soundtracks list. This is having not listened to it since playing it three or four times when it came out before sticking it in the bag of purchasing misteps destined for Record and Tape Exchange. The vocals are rubbish but 30 years on we've been inured against rubbish singing so it is much less jarring in 2012. Musically it sounds incredibly contemporary. Reminds me of Air. Air after they've been on a steady diet of Devo, "Monster Movie", "Flow Motion", Boards of Canada, "Systems of Romance", early Faith No More and er ... Lena Lovitch.

I never got - or indeed properly listened to the album, when it was released. Maybe time for an exploring, then.

Only bought it quite recently, though it had been on my 'to get' list for ages. Yeah, I really like it; heavily krautrock influenced, as you say, some may say self indulgent, I would say gloriously idiosyncratic and eccentric.

I remember the single but I don't think I've ever heard the entire album, will have to check it out. I'm a big fan of the Hugh Cornwell/Robert Williams album from around the same time. Talking of Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh appears on that one.

Exactly! All good art/music is self indulgent in some way and I don't know how you can do idiosyncratic and eccentric without that quality. Otherwise it is just fake / formula.

I bought at the time to hear what he was doing with the bass and was therefore a bit non plussed as he has a very different sound with the band.

ps thanks for the tip-off

Ahhhh, Euroman Commeth. I never though that would raise it's head here.

I always wanted to go to the Pompedou Centre and strike the JJ pose, with docks and leather jacket, feet akimbo...

Brilliant.

As for the album, I found it strange but ultimately dissapointing, but glad I bought it. Love the European maps on the inside sleeve.

A fab album! And it's stood the test of time very well i reckon.

The CD reissue is well worth hunting down because it features several tracks live which work really well, from the same gig as the version of Crabs on the Don't Bring Harry ep i think.

Link for the MP3 version showing the same track list: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Euroman-Cometh-Jean-Jacques-Burnel/dp/B001J8H672/ref=sr_1_11_digr?ie=UTF8&qid=1331123307&sr=8-11

Not sure if the "east world" cd on amazon is the same one i have... will have to check!

I love the Nosferatu album Hugh and Robert Williams did at the same time. A most creative time for the Stranglers i reckon.

The Fire and Water album JJ and Dave did has it's moments too.

Thanks, but vinyl's a bit tricky until I get the turntable down out of the roof. I'm not even sure it still works, yet! And besides of plenty of Stranglers albums to be catching up on, first.

Never saw those! I have the:

version.

Also have copies of the earlier 'Fire and Water' (Burnell and Greenfield) and 'Nosferatu' (Cornwell and Williams) albums knocking around somewhere.
