Current UK heavy psych/space rock/improv bands?
Feb 15, 2012, 12:26
Does anyone know of any current UK-based heavy psych/space rock/improv bands along the lines of White Hills, Wooden Shjips, etc? Everything seems to be in mainland Europe and the US.

Any recommendations/links would be much appreciated!

The Cosmic Dead - http://thecosmicdead.bandcamp.com/album/the-cosmic-dead-2

Highly recomended. Great live too - They're supporting White Hills at the forthcoming Glasgow gig at The Arches.

Also, Bong. Last years debut album "Beyond Ancient Space" is excellent.

I've not heard that much but I gather the bands Litmus and Astro-Henge are worth a listen if you like that sort of thing. (Note to self- must sniff these out)

I've seen Litmus. They're really good. In fact, depending on my state i should be seeing them again at a festival, this Summer.

Not exactly White Hills style, but UK groups worth keeping an ear out for:

CRANIUM PIE - sort of proggy/postpunky/psychedelic, with a bit of "Canterbury" texture even. Nice album on Regal Crabomophone last year (division of Fruits De Mer label).

CULT OF DOM KELLER - dark heavy psych, very good stuff live. As far as I know they have just 2 self-released EP's so far, which are interesting but not as good as the live sound I thought (I caught them in Austin last year). Would like to hear them do a "proper album"!

ADMIRAL SIR CLOUDSLEY SHOVELL - haven't looked them up in a while, but they had some great "70's garage metal" demo recordings on myspace once upon a time, and periodically I will see their name mentioned in places like here and Shindig.

THE LAST PEOPLE ON EARTH - put out an interesting "psychedelic concept album" a couple years back, I think it got reviewed here at Unsung? Don't know of anything else they've done.

(Already mentioned: Mugstar, Earthling Society, Bong, Gnod!)

Then there's the Lunar Dunes/Solus 3 gang and Black Tempest, who get lots of mentions around here, but are not what I would call "heavy rock". ;-)

Awesome band. But the best UK band on the realm of heavy / psych / stoned out madness is still the almighty HEADS - http://www.myspace.com/theheadsrock

Good call on Cult of Dom Keller. Have a listen here:

Also Cathode Ray Eyes, the solo project of Dom Keller's guitarist I believe:

Oh and thanks for mentioning Black tempest! Gotta plug Space Opera:
