Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds
Feb 09, 2012, 20:08
Since I was 13 or so that I love this record. I bought recently the super audio cd version and it's sooooooo fab to my ears! Maybe I'm alone here but I can't resist: "the chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one, he said" and so on!

This brings back childhood memories, my dad had the gatefold vinyl. I used to pore over it whilst listening. In a funny way it was my first introduction to the Moodies as when my dad played one of their albums I remember saying, this sounds like War Of The Worlds. It wasn't until much laer I realised Hayward is only on two tracks but it sort of had that vibe. I had a friend at school who told me to listen to it on acid - "It's like the Martians have really landed". You always (as Bill Hicks said) know one of those people who tells you that you have to do something to make a trip more fun. Well, we gave it a try but all that happened is it sounded really disco, with the hi-hat and wah-wah on Eve Of The War. Still good though - a conceptual prog/disco masterpiece!

Yeah, a masterpiece! With or without acid help ;-)

I like it too! Some top tunes, although the cheese factor can be a bit high, but you have to love a tune describing the fate of quiet Kentish villagers getting horrifically vaporised by deadly heat-rays all to a disco beat. Funky crisping flesh, yeah!!

I was lucky enough to be see the touring show as a freebie a couple of years back (Julia from Solus 3 is in the band and got me a sneaky guest pass! Huzzah for sneakiness) and it was a really fun, entertaining night. A kind of hybrid between a musical and an arena rock spectacle.

Tell you what though; back stage those martians are proper divas. Tsk.

That's a bit suspect. The martian's have soft-spots being as they are wobbly, jellyish, gloppy things. Whose side are you on? 8^)
