And of course "Ballad Of Tindersticks" - one of the most grim but fascinating and eloquent accounts of the drunken madness of being in a band on the road.

More of a lecture than a narrative, but Terrence Mckenna on Shaman's Re-evolution. Mr Cope's Reynard the Fox a little bit Bob Dylan's Judas Priest song Iggy Pop on that Mogwai song off CODY i think.

handofdave wrote: I like 'Skylon!' off of Gruff Rhys's 'Candylion', where it's revealed that he's a 'bomb disposal expert' during a flight threatened by a 'ticking beer can', along with an actress in 'mediocre movies and frivolous magazines'. Rocks along in a genial acoustic fashion with some psychy wobblings. I remember reading an interview with Gruff somewhere when (and relevant to this thread) he said that the first Velvet Underground song he heard as a kid was The Gift so he thought at first that they were a Welsh band ha ha.

This one, despite its initial sparseness, is a proper grower. http://www.wearevillagers.com/ I know it's a generic band site link but 'Cecilia and her selfhood' is on the home page, at the time of writing. Saves having to watch movie ads on YouTube.

When a poet uses musical backing like John Cooper Clarke with the Invisible Girls do they become narrative songs, especially with great music like on "(I Married A) Monster From outer Space"?

JD Blackfoot "The Song Of Crazy Horse" (18 minutes of singing & speaking, tells the story of the famous Indian chief -- quite moving actually.) My favorite Genesis track is "Battle of Epping Forest" in which Gabriel sings/speaks in many different character voices. Lothar & The Hand People "Space Hymn" -- in which the reciter literally tries to hypnotize the listener ("you are floating in space . . . .")!

He should do something useful with it, like "You are floating in space and you no longer have any desire to smoke cigarettes".
