Best Fest?

Right. I'm sat freezing in my shed. And starting to get a little wishful that the warm weekends were upon us, once again. Yes, I'm getting all nostalgic for a good festival.

I've never really enjoyed those massive events where I get jostled around - and, if on the offchance there's rain* all the shelter's swamped by bodies before I can get to it. No, give me a nice, chilled weekend where there;s plenty of space and a friendly face.

Recent fave festivals for me:

Wickerman Festival 2005: Featured The Stranglers, Dreadzone, Space Ritual and a fabbo band I've not heard of since called Merecedes (?), as well as Arthur Brown and some proper dub DJs and... that's about all I can remember of it. Perfect size. Lovely strangers to fall in a heap with... you know the sort of thing. http://www.virtualfestivals.com/festivals/reviews/2082

Wychwood Festival 2007: Robyn Hitchcock was the outstanding act, but it was the vibe that did it for me, really. That and finally being able to reveal to my kids just what it was like to see Dreadzone. http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/wychwood/2007/

WOMAD 2009: These rather middle aged middle class events had never really appealed to be in the past, but we sorta tagged along with some friends. Yes, it was pretty expensive, but on seeing that most of the acts were in fact huge, top flight acts in their own parts of the world - and the sheer amount of stages putting on the most diverse range of music I could see how it had to be. So, just for a one-off I bit the bullet. And was so glad I did. Peter Gabriel was the only shit thing on, thankfully. Dub Colossus blew me away, as did Dennis Bovell, an Israli band called The Apples, Radiokijada and a whole lot more. http://womad.org/festivals/archive/2009/charlton-park/lineup/

So, what about you?

I remember recording pretty much all of the Glastonbury coverage in the mid nineties and discovering some amazing new bands sifting through the resultant swathes of tape, and reading of impromptu Ozric jams, but now most of the heavily sponsored Enormo-fests leave me cold. I did Leeds a few years ago to see the Smashing Pumpkins and NIN and it was a very enjoyable day in the sun, and had great fun at Milton Keynes in 99 when Metallica did their mini festival (Metallica, Sepultura, Placebo, Pitchshifter, QOTSA and Ministry for £35!).

I do like the way umpteen smaller festivals have started appearing. Had good times with good people at Whitby Goth Weekend on a few occassions, and last summer had an amazing weekend at InFest in Bradford. Both indoor things for those of a goth persuasion.

Would really like to experience Maschinenfest, and Roadburn this year looks fantastic (Conan, Bong, and JK Broaderick doing Jesu, Final, and more!). And should get to Supersonic this year, despite it being on a very inconvenient weekend.

Haven't been to many, especially not recently but the one I remember the most and really enjoyed was:-

Out of the Ordinary fest is always fairly pleasant, though it does sometimes seem like a small new age market town more than an actual festival. Its main benefit is that it usually corners the very last of the festival season by happening on early September. And the weather somehow always manages to be ten times better than at Glastonbury.

And yeah, the cold is fucking ridiculous at the moment. I keep on dreaming of laying out on a field in the middle of July only to wake up unable to feel my fingers.

Wow. What a line up! My mate Chris went to loads of these older festivals. Everything was less... I dunno, pressurised and over managed, back then. He was at Weeley Festival and Isle Of Wight and all those old school weekenders. I'm forever asking about his recollections of such iconic gigs.

I enjoyed this one, although it rained quite a bit. And when it wasn’t raining I got peed on by a dog:

Glasto 1990. Happy Mondays cocking it up, Lush so quiet you couldn't hear them, Sinead O' Connor was a bit wobbly, the Cure were fucking amazing.
Didn't pay, snuck in without tent. Me, ex, and Ant (chum) sitting to the right of the main stage. Acid was produced. Then it got messy. Ex and Ant went off to get the tent, leaving me to keep our patch. Absolutely off my bloody head early afternoon. Skinning up a large one in front of a copper (who didn't care thank fuck).
Accidentally snogging some bloke selling strong lager. That did not go down well as they returned with said tent at that moment. Tripping your nuts off is as good an excuse as any!! He brought that up for years afterwards.
They had to pay on the way back in..they were so fucked they thought it'd be fine to just waltz in..funnily enough a donation was accepted and they were allowed back in!!
Blimey, those were the days!
The highlight was Ant knocking over the large jug of milk whilst paying for a brew. Much apology. Then he did it again. We ran away!
