In the US.

Remember that movie "Slacker" from the early '90's? Austin is still a lot like that only with more cowpoke outfits, tattooed dudes in pickup trucks, and drunken frat/sorority types wandering the streets at night (home of the huge state University of Texas).

The action on "the strip" at night rivals Waikiki and Las Vegas -- only with music (often live bands) blaring from 100 nightclubs at top volume. Mexican metal bars, steampunk dress up parties, goth techno, country & western, corny retro disco, a little of everything. A lot of the clubs are quasi-outdoors due to the nice weather (shorts & sandals 11 months a year!)

Amazing food too! Tex-Mex with a very artsy flair (like the California of the South.) Anything you can imagine can be put in a taco or burrito, and they are very big on organic locally-sourced yada yada (food politics aside that means FRESH ingredients.) But be forewarned that if you order a "hot" dish it will be SERIOUSLY SPICY ~~~HOTTT!!!!~~~

I know, this looks incredible!!

Has anyone ever been to it? Anyone from the UK? I'm seriously thinking of taking a trip there for my 40th birthday in April but would need a lot more info. No idea how much it'd all cost, where to stay, how to book? If anyone can provide any insight then it's be HUGELY appreciated.

It could well be that I go on my own but I'm unsure. Shite personal life after a marriage breakdown late last year so I'm in need of sunshine and great vibes.

Sorry to hear about your marriage n stuff btw, hope you're OK ~~~~~

Cheers Squid. Quite the opposite of OK but getting by is what I have to do. Tough tough times especially as there's a 3 year old daughter involved as well. Peeps keep saying that things will get better......I bloody hope so. Meeting some psyche loving dames would be a start ;-)

Good luck to yer mate, and if things get tough remember that there are some very caring HHers out there who might be able to make things seem a bit better. keep on rocking.

Dog - you've just made the whole thing sound a lot more tempting. You should work for the Austin tourist board with those descriptions. Everything I like is described in there.

Squid - thanks again. Yes, these faceless internet boards full of music freaks and nerds are very nice places when it comes to offering help in times of need. I've had good words and advice from a couple of people on the Spiritualized forum and elsewhere too. Hearing from people who have been through similar or who know of human grief and topsy turvy emotions is very comforting and does put things into perspective when it all feels a little too hard to handle. The 'festive' season was a new low, very bleak, dark thoughts, worried about my own self. Bit better since but I know that it's a long road ahead. Severe lack of sleep needs to be sorted pronto (walked forehead first into a wall earlier - not good).

I was out with a couple of friends last night and they said going to this Festival would be wonderful for me. It's a 50/50 split in my head. On one hand it looks amazing and would be a cool one off trip of a lifetime but on the other it's a helluva lot of money which could be spent on a short break with my daughter, or similar.

Maybe I'll set up a Facebook plea, "send me to Austin!!", then see if it goes viral with some famous people joining in the fund raising (Stephen Fry has just pledged £3.75 - woo-hoo!). Haha. Dafter things have happened online haven't they.

I'm off to check out that APF website.
