A Barney Bubbles documentary was fleetingly mentioned on an amusing earlier thread http://www.headheritage.co.uk/headtohead/unsung/topic/59517/flat/ Here's an update for anyone interested. The documentary is now scheduled to be broadcast on 2 January 2012 at 4pm GMT, BBC Radio 4. It has been made by a journalist/writer called Mark Hodkinson.

Hopefully it will be a Ghastly Gorman free zone. That is Paul Gorman the author who has put his name onto a book about Barney Bubbles.

I read mark hodkinson's book 'the last mad usrge of youth' a while ago and thought it was hugely enjoyable. I've meant to get other books from his company - pomona - but never quite got round to it. If anyone has read any of the other books and wouldn't mind recomending any that would be appreciated....

Great! no sign of Paul Gorman. Strange that the biographer was not consulted...and probably no sign of the BBC BB doc on the BB website. Edit: There is now well after the horse has bolted: "Today the rehabilitation of Barney Bubbles’ legacy moved a step further with the BBC Radio 4 broadcast of a half-hour documentary about the personal life of this graphic design master. I was refused a preview* copy, having been told last summer by the presenter/writer Mark Hodgkinson that I would not be needed as a contributor. No mention was made of my book, exhibition or this blog. The exclusion of the latter three projects feels clunky even from an objective P.O.V. (as confirmed by a number of supportive messages). While I am perfectly content^ not to have been involved – not my cup of tea, ’nuff said – I am also extremely chuffed that Bubbles and his legacy have reached another staging post in the journey to widespread appreciation". http://www.barneybubbles.com/blog/archives/5473 *Nobody got a preview copy. ^ I'll be taking bets whilst he is receiving his supportive messages doing the James Brown cape routine.

I thought the documentary was very good, with a level of personal detail rarely revealed. I'm not sure if it will be on i-Player or not, if it is I will put a link here later. These were the people Mark Hodkinson interviewed: Aten (Barney's Son) Brian Griffin (photographer who worked with Barney) Malcolm Garrett (designer who was at Radar Records) Jill (Barney's sister) Nik Turner (Hawkwind, Sphynx, Inner City Unit) Pauline Kennedy (Barney's assistant) Nick Lowe (Brinsley Schwarz and, err, himself of course!) Mike Heath (Rebecca and Mike Barney Bubbles historians) Gerry Fitzgerald (guitarist, Hawkwind stage set creator) Dave Robinson (Stiff Records founder)

It just sounds like a bruised ego... and where's the proof that those supportive messages (from friends and acquaintances presumably) were objective anyway; that's spin. My opinion is that there was no need for Mark Hodkinson to furnish anyone with preview copies of his Radio 4 documentary, particularly given that the person requesting one isn't an important media figure who needs to work ahead of time on reviews (or is needed for advance promotional purposes). I also can't see why Mark should have mentioned those three projects either. When I watch or listen to a documentary about any artist, unless there is a really important point to make, they do not say 'Oh... and this person has done this in the past, and this person did this in the past...'. To do so would have made it 'clunky'. Essentially what Mark did do was let the first person testimonial flow, with a level of intimacy never previously made public. Barney Bubbles is, after all, where the focus of discussion should be. The Daily Telegraph have written a review (scroll down near bottom): http://tinyurl.com/7ruhgpu
