I know what you mean about IRR vs Gramophone. I still have a soft spot for both.

What concerns me most in the Classical world (and in book publishing)is the clear policy of signing artists as much on their image as on their talent. Seems that if the record company can't imagine that an audience will want to either be you or **** you then you can forget it. Nothing new there in a way but usually that kind of image grooming in classical followed the establishment of talent not the other way round. Pogorelic is hte first pin-up signing I can remember but he could really play. Most of my classical vinyl from the 60 and 70s doesn't have anyone on the cover!

That said I was the publicist for a couple of years for the specialist classical arm of a major in the late 80s and was never asked for marketing money to be spent in return for coverage for the records I was working. Perhaps it was going on at a different level but I was under the impression that in the specialist area it was fairly straight-up. Of course that is nearly 25 years ago and I had stopped doing PR by 1991.
