Imagine Neil Young’s depressive masterwork On the Beach, only replace Neil Young with an untrained singer who vacillates between a haunted, plaintive drawl and a raspy shout, force the musicians to play constantly out of time, drench everything in tortured lead guitar, and deprive the band any second-takes.

I was just having a look through to see whether Bob Calvert had gotten a mention yet. I remember someone telling me that they used to let him out (or possibly he was simply allowed to come and go as he pleased if he was in by choice) to do gigs at one point.

That's more like the music of the criminally insane...

Not sure whether this is true or not but someone once expressed the opinion to me that Kristen Hersch's better material was the result of being written during a particular part of her recurring depression cycle.

She says that herself, and explains it in a beautiful and honest way. Let's face it, we all have 'mental health' issues to varying degrees, don't we, pedantically ? It's just those degrees. It's such a fine line between 'normal' and perceived 'normal' and back again/always there.... ?.

Probably right. Mick has gone on record saying that in retrospect he was mentally unstable when he recorded it, for whatever reason. Wasn't it just after being kicked out of the Deviants? How crazy do you have to get to be kicked out of the Deviants?

Absolutely true. Which is why I think the only measure we can take is the level of exploitation involved. So the only question that matters to me is do those getting paid off of the art and those with any kind of a duty of care actually care or are they just getting their fiscal loyalty card stamped? If the answer is that they do really care then the rest follows from that I think.

Loren (Mazzacane) Connors would be an interesting one from an outsider perspective. Massive number of self released records that are thankfully now being collected and re-released. Not sure what state of mind he was in when he recorded the Daggett St records (Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations Vol 1-9) but he literally howls along with his guitar on some of these.

R. Stevie Moore would be another prolific outsider. Albert and Donald Ayler would also spring to mind and Wild Man Fischer.

Robot, i'm guessing you may have had a read of Terry Castle's piece in the latest LRB? If not it would be right up your street.

EDIT: Great thread!
