[quote="Fitter Stoke"]Rolling Stones 'Between The Buttons'
Caravan 'In The Land Of Grey & Pink'
'Hatfield and the North'
Roxy Music 'For Your Pleasure'
Kevin Ayers 'Joy Of A Toy'
Yes 'Yessongs'
Jethro Tull 'Stand Up'
Pink Floyd 'Ummagumma'
Elton John 'Captain Fantastic'
Echo and the Bunnymen 'Heaven Up Here'

Hatfield and the North I always imagined was the Severn near Newport for some reason. But in fact it is 'The real North' of Reykjavik. The Pink sky is a conflation of a frieze by Signorelli. I think this was a 1973 trip by Laurie Allan and Paul Misso perhaps to catch a volcanic activity. The latter was the photo taker of the Glastonbury triple LP cover, which in itself is a great Barney masterpiece.

I dug out those Warlocks Lps the other day and they are still sounding pretty tasty

They are good! I've only got the albums up to and including 'Surgery'. There's been some more recent ones I think. Any good?

Seen 'em a couple of times, first time at the Roadhouse in Manchester - two drumkits on a stage the size of a flea's codpiece.

Roger Dean's early work (up to Relayer and Yesterdays) still does it for me. Especially Yessongs.

King Crimson's USA - no idea who designed it but it's a fabulous piece of futuristic rock n roll iconography.

Santana's Lotus - again no idea who designed it but the Japanese fold-out vinyl version was a joy to behold.

Houses of the Holy with the belly band was the visual definition of mysterious in 1973.

Hipgnosis have a great catalogue but the vinyl Wish You Were Here in the black shrink wrap was genius and the images within as enigmatic as the music. Hard to explain how "other" that album sounded when it came out. Talk about a piece of design capturing the spirit of the musical contents. I also love Animals. The flying pig stunt was stupid but the photos of Battersea Power Station are a great postcard from dirty old London just before Thatcher and Livingstone started to fight over its soul. A fight that is still going on in many ways.

The Pop Group's "Y" cover (with the poster) was a genius mixture of Fine Art, Punk collage and reportage.

You've got to have something with a great live photo so the original gold version of Made In Japan wins that one for me.

Finally I have to admit a huge soft spot for a fairly straight ahead Hard Bop record called Art Pepper and the Rhythm Section. Which teamed Miles' core band (Garland / Jones / Chambers) with the west coast alto player who was in somewhat reduced circumstances at the time but pulls out a killer set of performances. In design terms it is almost kitsch but back in 1980 I really wanted the jacket and shirt Art wears on the cover shot. For a man clinging to the wreckage of his life and career he looks supremely chilled.

Some great choices there Ian - I particularly the USA cover. Your mention of a "Live band" picture made me jump laterally to Blue Oyster Cult's On Your Feet or On Your Knees. Tyranny and Mutation and their 1st album were good covers too.

Roger Dean has gone through the cool/uncool mill so many times it's more than confusing than a flying mountain. But, it is just classicaly well delineated, quirky and beautiful and timless imagery as far as I'm concerned. He did loads of the organic/mechanic thing years before it became a fantasy/sci-fi staple and thee "Yes" logo is, simply, one of the most brilliant and evocative logos ever drawn. My dad had the albums (until I knicked 'em obviously) and I just remember that the sleeves and that logo were so sumptuous that I just wanted to hear the music. Plus, let's face it, Avatar was practically a Yes album cover with Dances With Wolves thrown at it.

Yes Wish You were here was Storm Thorgersons theory of presence and absence so when I first met him I asked him to sign on top of the shrinkwrap with a dead biro. It is very difficult to impress him, but he did so without batting an eyelid - the other thing which flickered scarce a murmur was my photo of an antiques shop in Durban called Storm Ferguson. On the cover of A Nice Pair, the front door spyhole for Mme Fear really does exist.
