Got a vintage turntable with my tax refund
Mar 23, 2011, 12:31
And it sounds great! Much better than that USB one I've been using, or anything I've been using before in fact. It's a United Audio Dual system in case anyone wants to know. Been playing Ramleh and Popol Vuh on it, and they sound like much different records...

Great, enjoy it!!! I'm not familiar with your table, but it's worth checking out that it's set up correctly (tracking force, anti skate force, vertical tracking and check the cartridge leads are connected to the correct pins) as these tweaks can all improve the audio quality.

You might be able to download a copy of the manual here:

And it's worth searching this site for archived discussions relating to your model:

cds are handy for ease of playing but there is something about an LP record that makes it special

Yeah, yeah! Exactly like that.

Was originally gonna get something else but it was made in Denmark and the dealer didn't have the proper adapter for it, so I got the one I got now (I think it was the better choice anyhow...)

You're darn tootin', not least the sound quality. I've spent as much on my vinyl playing equipment than the rest of my hi-fi put together, much to the amusement or consternation of my friends who (rightfully) joke about my droning on about vertical and horizontal tracking forces, the benefits of 12" arms over 9" ones, belt drive versus direct drive versus idler drive, etc etc. Well I don't care, 'cos the end result is great sound.

The plethora of audiophile vinyl reissues on the market shows we're not alone.

Just as a point of reference, I compared my newly-acquired vinyl edition of 'Forever Changes' with the deluxe CD remaster of a couple of years back. Despite playing the CD on a very decent CD player (a Sugden Masterclass PDT4 for what it's worth), the LP won hands down for warmth, depth and stereo imaging. And this is just one example. I firmly believe that a good quality vinyl pressing played on a decent turntable/arm/cartridge combination will always sound better than the equivalent CD, especially if the recording emanates from the analogue era - which I'm afraid most of my favourite music does.

And there's the undeniable, tangible joy of handling a record and the aesthetic pleasures of a decent LP sleeve to consider as well.

Come on then name YOUR turntable! (I'll tell you mine tho maybe its humbler than yours ;)

Completely agree with you bout the superiority of vinyl sound and it would seem vinyl is getting pretty hip- wonder if we have some kinda full circle reaction to the push- button ipod culture in our midst- hey how sexy is a turntable and mygod! its got err moving parts!!!

I've just bought a SME 20/12. It's the most expensive thing I own after my house! But I figure what the hell - I've got a decent vinyl collection and I want to hear it at its best while my declining aural faculties are still reasonably operational. And, as my dear late mum would have put it, I "might be deed tomorrow"...

I've never left vinyl as a format. I first got a CD player way back in 1984 and loved it, but always felt that my records sounded better. Consequently I never got rid of my record collection even when I "upgraded" favourite titles to CD. Now I'm endeavouring to get audiophile vinyl versions of records I only own in digital format, so the wheel's come full circle for me.

Being ever addicted to vinyl, I've always striven to get the best turntable I could afford. So in my time I've owned and loved record spinners from Goldring Lenco, Thorens, Dual, Rega and Michell. I've still got a Planar 3 and a Gyro and don't feel inclined to part with either. They've both got different aural characteristics to the SME which, being tonally neutral, is really best suited to classical and acoustic music. The Gyro is the rock god.

I think you're right about the vinyl resurgence being due, in part, to the blandness and low-fi of mp3's. My daughter - whose hearing is much sharper than mine, natch - is knocked out by the quality of LP sound, having previously listened to all of her music on an iPod, and now wants a turntable for her twelfth birthday. Cool or what?

I don't think there's any denying that vinyl sounds better and that having a nice hunk of vinyl spinning on your turntable while perusing the sleeve and diggin the artwork at the size gawd intended is one of life's great pleasures. I too still have most of my vinyl collection but have become mostly a cd listener now and have 3000+ cds. My plan is to buy a turntable and bring my stereo back to vinyl-capable. Will need a new receiver most likely. Then I'll be purchasing vinyl copies of important (to me) stuff I have on cd but not vinyl. Full circle, yep!

Maybe you'd like to buy this----

----as I just happen to be selling it at the moment (!). Another classic stab at perfecting the art of vinyl reproduction in the 1980s. Though you'd have to buy your own arm and cartridge!
