quite prolific isn't he?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Rodr%C3%ADguez-L%C3%B3pez#Discography

13 albums in the last 2 years!

I like the Mars Volta and was thinking of getting some of his solo stuff, but where the hell do I start? I see that there's been a few mentions in the best of 2010 thread. Anyone got any suggestions?

He's a god. He's the closest thing we have now to Miles as a band leader and funnily enough he is also similarly limited as a soloist but still really effective .

His solo work is a huge influence on my end of the Dunes / SOLUS3 thing. Prog that really grooves. Fugazi meets Crimson.

Anyway I would start with the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & Lydia Lunch record which is steaming (it's like the Cope "Rite" albums but taken up fifteen or twenty gears) and maybe "Ciencia De Los InĂștiles" which is right down the other end of the scale and then "The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange". Those three would be a pretty great start. "Old Money" is a big favourite too.
The only one to avoid is the Damo collaboration which is disappointing on all sorts of levels.

From what I've read about Mars Volta I'm very intrigued. I haven't heard any of their albums, but the few reviews/interview I have read have got be very interested. Where should I start ?

The Bedlam in Goliath is my current favourite. Frances the Mute is pretty damn fine too.

Thanks Ian. high praise indeed! I spotted the Lydia Lunch collaboration and though that might be interesting. I also noticed that there's a best of about to be released, but i am not sure about this because I think that O R-L's work really should be listened to as complete albums, rather than listening to unrelated bits that have been put together.

Yes both are wonderful though the live one (Scab Dates) is probably the best introduction to their unique approach to rock music. As is the footage of the Electric Ballroom show from 2002 (?) if you can find it. Their official message board is full of ROIO trading options too.

A best of? Weird. Wouldn't like to have to pick the bones out of the 20 or so solo records I have and I am probably missing two or three on top!

I'd stick with the main albums. There are only one or two that probably weren't quite the sum of their parts / intentions. Not a bad ratio given that I seem to have 26 of the bloody things so far!
