I've been told that it's something you can learn to like, but I've been trying and trying and failing miserably. It even turns me off a lot of Thrash and Hardcore/Post-Hardcore music that I know I'd otherwise dig. I'm a firm believer that there's something in every genre that I can get into, but Death Metal/Black Metal/Grind Metal/other-Metal-that-ends-with-"core" is proving impossible for me to like because of that damned growl! The sludgy stuff like Nadja I can dig, though. What say ye, Heads? Worse than the Generic Indie Whineâ„¢? Or a style that only reveals itself upon further listening?

Actually the thing that gets me is "cookie monster" vocals more than anything.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I don't think you can be a true metal fan without some kind of appreciation for it.

I disagree, I agree that the Death Metal howl is off-putting but I don't think of it as "true metal" (to slightly mis-quote you). Priest, Manowar etc etc is True Metal in my book. I loves a bit of thrash me, but death metal (and especially black metal) leaves me cold. Unless it changes genre every 5 seconds like Crotchduster or is genius-funny like Ten Masked Men (I mean, have you heard Something Kinda Ooh?). Each to their own though, innit? Surely the world is a richer place for a bit of screamo?

I keep hoping to discover something really heavy with a SINGER. Not a big fan of the metal growl unless its natuural ala Lemmy or Matthew Pike. & there I guess its not really a metal growl is it? Has become a bit of a cliche hasn't it? quite apart from being aesthetically unpleasant. Stevo

I love good Heavy Metal. Grunts, growls or screems dont bother me at all and quite often it's very fitting with the music.
