Bill Nelson / Be Bop deluxe
Aug 31, 2010, 17:11
I've just ordered the remastered cd of Bill Nelson 'Quit Dreaming..' for just under a fiver. I haven't heard it in years and I remembered how much I liked when noodling about re. 'Do You Dream In Colour', on The Pump. Amazon also has the BBD's Axe Victim/Futurama remastered plus Sunburst Finish ( extra tracks unremastered) for £15. I've only heard a couple or so songs years ago of theirs, and I've no idea of their titles now or what albums. Any advice HH groovers ?

edit: the Japan EMI remaster od SF goes for forty odd quid!

You could do ok with the "Air Age" 2 disc EMI anthology. Has more or less anything you could want and it is beautifully sequenced.

That said the BBD albums are all great. Get all those you mention and "Modern Music" and you wont be sorry. The live album is a bit so-so. Nice playing. Terrible sound. The BBC sessions are all worth having. Of the main albums "Drastic Plastic" is not essential but "Lovers Are Mortal" is a great song.

Amazingly Bill Nelson has had about 30 albums out since 2000 all of which are worthwhile plus a huge box set of out takes and the like. I have nearly all of them but stopped buying the new ones this year as I was still absorbing the records from 2008 (not to mention everyone else's records as well). Of the 30 or so I can hugely recommend "Romance of Sustain", "Dreamland To Starboard", "Rosewood (in two volumes)" and "Orpheus In Ultraland".

Thanks for the recommendations and advice Ian . He is most definitely Unsung. Talk about prolific, there were many times in the past when I would be listening to some heavenly or downright odd or wonderfully happy skewed tunes, I just can never remember them, apart from his 'hit' and Sister Seagull, and then loads of sounds that I will immediately recognise again when I plug back in.

I would definitely go with the "Air Age" double then if it is still available (bound to be around for less than a tenner) and then dip a toe in the more recent solo stuff. His tribute to Stuart Adamson on "Romance of Sustain" is incredibly beautiful.

I've just ordered the main 3 BBD's, and I'm going to delve into Bill's vast output over the coming months plus!

He is one of the great "lost" ones. Though a lot of that is self-imposed opt-out from the mainstream music industry. There are a couple of the recent albums which are amongst the finest instrumental rock recordings ever made. No question of that. Someone like Nonesuch should have taken him under their wing eons ago and nurtured knowing that somewhere along the line there would be a huge "Paris Texas" style pay-day.

The only problem with following his career is that it gets real expensive real quick. Don't blame me. As with Omar from TMV the work rate and the standard of work is astonishing.

I decided to go for those 3 first because I'm a bit obsessive with music, and the anth is still available, but I'd really like the complete BBD albums . When I got into the ISB, I had to dive into Robin Williamson, so to speak! (I hope he didn't notice..) Fuck, that would be an extremeley wonderful alt psych folk job film.. 'Being Robin Williamson'. Would you emerge from a Kazoo or would he merely pluck you into his Bard world ?

When it comes to horrific images that comes very close to the scene where Alan Partridge is table dancing for the IRA. Shudder.

Though i suppose you could get right in there where it hurts and give ISB IBS (!).
