WPF/BJM interface

Was listening to this the other day by the wonderful William Penn Fyve and suddenly noticed that The Brian Jonestown Massacre have built a whole career from this track - and I love the BJM so its not a 'dig' (ha ha see what I did there) just an amusing observation.

It is indeed a lovely record. I'd not actually heard it before.
I do quite like BJM, BTW.

What always struck me with that track was that it was basically a novelty track with really inventive music. With the lyrics you'd half expect the music to be pretty throwaway. So I'd wondered about other instances of that, bands who obviously care about the music they create but put joke lyrics over it successfully.

I also wondered what the rest of the band's material was like, if the lyrics got any more serious or anything.
Not sure if there is more of them collected anywhere.
Is this the band that had Greg Rolie in pre-Santana?

Yeah, I agree - the whole garage rock genre is littered with novelty type songs where the lyrics are tongue in cheek (and often downright corny) but the music is amazing. Another great example is That Creature by The Sweet Acids http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=864PqHjTCrg but there are literally hundreds, especially dance craze cash ins etc. They were clearly an attempt by young regional teen bands to get themselves a national hit but their lack of musical finesse kinda scuppered any chance of airplay but on the other hand makes for great listening these days. Hoorah!

I believe "William Penn Fyve" only put out the one 7" (not sure what's on the B-side?) It's also on the "Pebbles" series credited as "William Penn V" (that series was all bootleg needledrops.) Though when the group gigged, they were known as "William Penn & His Pals"!

They were an early San Fran band that opened for all those other bands that got big (you see the name on ancient posters sometimes.) Greg Rollie was not a member.

Looks like there is a CD out though -- 6 songs, 3 alternate takes plus an advertising jingle. Sounds like everything they recorded and then some!

Listening to the samples, I'd say the rest of their stuff sounds like generic mid-sixties beat group (a Beatles-y pop song, go-go dance numbers, etc.)

Well I guess he was in the band early on then (wiki only says he played "at least one gig" at a high school in 1965!) -- but he is not listed on the recordings, so must have moved on. (Ya learn something every day . . .)
