Slots in 'there'.
Aug 23, 2010, 13:36
At bedtime, flicking through radio stations, I heard someone introduce 'How Soon Is Now' as being from The Smiths' Meat Is Murder LP.
Instantly I though, 'ya eejit', until I checked that Amazon are selling some cooked up idea of it with said track slotted in either at the end of side one or the start of side two (thinking of it as a 'vinyl'), and their first now includes 'This Charming Man'!
WTF?
That the d.j didn't know what the fuck he was talking about is besides the point, just wonder how many albums y'all have seen that have received similar unecessary fannying about?
The inclusion of 'Virgina Plain' on Roxy's 1st could've waited til the end, at least, instead of being shoved in third or fourth.

I remember as a kid taking Kilimanjaro ( Zebra cover ) back to the shop as it didn't have Reward on it. They apologised and I hadn't been the first, and they gave me a new copy of the Zebra cover that did have Reward on it.

I do agree that's it's annoying when the Record Co slot the 'hit' into the running order. Bonus track is fine as you're not messing with the integrity of the finished body of work.( I think The Beatles Past Masters collections was a very good idea re. collecting singles and b sides etc).

Not strictly tracks but I'm getting a little frustrated by the inclusion of pointless studio banter from the original mastertapes.
The main offender that springs to mind are the 40th Anniversary Doors remixes - eg at the end of Not To Touch The Earth you get a snippet of Paul Rothchild saying 'That gives us the ass end of it'. Whilst I'm not averse to respectful remixing or inclusion of editted out vocal and instrumental parts (eg the previously censored bits on Break On Through and The End), this kind of tomfoolery really breaks up the flow of the original albums and is a bit odd really.
Similarly on the Forever Changes remaster, its fair enough having elongated guitar solo codas but you don't really need Arthur Lee going 1,2,3,4 before the song. You can kinda take that as read!

The original cassette version of the debut had 'This Charming Man' as the first track on the second side.

Y by the Pop Group was issued with She Is Beyond Good and Evil as the first track which totally screwed the effect of how Thief Of Fire roared into life on the original vinyl.

Then again I have a big soft spot for the US vinyl version of Sulk which ended up on the 1988 cd. It's not right but works really well with the added tunes from Fourth Drawer Down etc.

For ages I couldn't hear the dying notes of Rock n Roll Suicide without expecting to hear John I'm Only Dancing right after (as in the early 90s Rykodisc reissue). I still can't infact ha ha

Yes indeedy. See: http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~moz/lyrics/smit-d.htm

* "This Charming Man" available on Sire LP, CD &CS, on Rough Trade UK and France cassette and on WEA CD & CS. It is also included on Australian releases on CBS and Festival, but at the end of the album instead of at the beginning of side 2.

Sure it's not that thing they did with 'tapes' now and then?

Sort of filled up the 'spare' space?

Will it sound the same?

It just wouldn't 'fit in' with the rest of the music tbh!

Quite a sombre sounding album that. Nothing near as jocular!

Wow cheers anyways, gonna investigate that one!

How about the differences between the UK and US versions of the Fall's Live at the Witch Trials? I prefer the US version because it has the rare b-side "Various Times", which fits better on the whole theme of the album. The two songs on the UK version that's not on the US version are rather twee IMO...
