I'd always been under the impression that Ziggy Stardust was Jimi Hendrix, until a few years ago.

Nah, he was 'Lady Stardust'.

David Bowie wrote:

People stared at the makeup on his face
Laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace
The boy in the bright blue jeans
Jumped up on the stage
And lady stardust sang his songs
Of darkness and disgrace

And he was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, the song went on forever
Yes he was awful nice
Really quite out of sight
And he sang all night long

Femme fatales emerged from shadows
To watch this creature fair
Boys stood upon their chairs
To make their point of view
I smiled sadly for a love I could not obey
Lady stardust sang his songs
Of darkness and dismay

And he was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, the song went on forever
And he was awful nice
Really quite out of sight
And he sang all night long

Oh how I sighed when they asked if I knew his name

Ooh they was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, and the song went on forever
He was awful nice
Really quite paradise
He sang all night long

"screwed up eyes and screwed down hair do" from Ziggy sounds like Marc though.

Well, that and the reference to playing guitar left hand made me think of Hendrix, really. And besides some older, cool, guru type at college we all worshipped told us all that, too.

Yeah I remember hearing that one too. Don't know why but my gut feeling was always that it was Bolan though.

Love the story about Taylor getting up onstage in Paris, all decked out in white robes & claiming he was the new messiah. The stuff of rock'n'roll legend. And if there's a better r'n'r track than "Brand New Cadillac" i'll eat my hat.
