Thought experiment for you record nerds out there: I am trying to think of some examples of "imaginary albums" that could be pieced together from the solo work of members of a group (for a future radio program.) If that doesn't make sense yet, these are the two obvious ones I've come up with already: BEATLES EARLY 1970's -- taking the best of John, Paul, George & Ringo's albums to create a "fake" Beatles album from the era after they broke up. CSNY's NEXT ALBUM -- using David, Stephen, Graham & Neil's solo albums to create an early 70's follow-up to "Deja Vu" (in fact CSNY made at least 2 attempts to record such an album.) So what are some other groups that you could do this with? HUSKER DU is almost a possibility, using Mould & Hart's first two solo releases apiece after that band broke up. Problem is, niether sounded much like "Husker Du" at that point, and also two solo artist's worth of stuff to choose from is not ideal (I'd like at least 3 if not 4 members stuff to choose from -- in order to keep it down to no more than 3-4 songs per person and still get 10-12 songs for an "album".) THE WHO -- except you'd probably have too much Rog & Keith songs for comfort (and as I recall Moon's LP is a real stinker.) Plus Entwistle's solo albums don't get you far beyond his usual "2 decent songs per album." And a fair amount of Pete's best stuff wound up being recorded by The Who as well anyway. WIRE? -- except I don't have any of those guys' solo records or know enough about them. THROBBING GRISTLE? -- using Coil, Chris & Cosey, Psychic TV from the 80's and 90's. (This one would also require a lot of research since I don't know the material that well.) Perhaps some prog or metal band with many revolving members (Deep Purple or Hawkwind)? Anybody got any other hot ideas, or tried to do something like this? (I know there is a blog out there that put together a series of imaginary Beatles LP's already . . . )

Well, being prone as I am to state the bleedin' obvious and while we're on here; The Teardrop Explodes (sigh) Would contain Julian solo stuff, Troy Tate solo stuff (Ticket To The Dark etc), The Wild Swans (Paul Simpson)...actually there's nothing else I can think of (Alan Gill did the score to Letter To Bresnev I think, Mick Finkler? ho hum) so maybe this is a dead duck in the water before it starts. What about an imaginary Crucial Three album with .......... ah shut up now!

Well there is the missing link album between Relayer and Going For The One that could be culled from the five Yes solo albums of that era. A post split Bob / Bunny / Tosh album drawn from the later two's solo albums between 74 & 78 and Exodus & Rastaman Vibration. An album drawn from Ron, Rod and Ronnie various solo and collaborative albums in the period between Ooh La La and Some Girls. Get the right years (75 to 78) and the Purple one could be pretty good.

The pick of New Order's 90s side-projects might well have made a better album than either Republic or Get Ready. Revenge: Pineapple Face, Kiss the Chrome and Big Bang (The Trouble with Girls). Electronic: Getting Away with It, Get the Message, Disappointed and Forbidden City. The Other Two: Tasty Fish and Selfish. Bernard Sumner's appearance on 808 State's Ex-El: Spanish Heart. Monaco: What Do You Want From Me? Bernard Sumner's single with Sub Sub: This Time I'm Not Wrong.

If you were going to make an imaginary post-split Huskers album I reckon you'd have to move forward a few years and pair Sugar's "Copper Blue" with the second self-titled Nova Mob LP. The result wouldn't be all that dissimilar to "Warehouse Songs and Stories", as both Bob and Grant seemed to have come to terms with their musical past a little more by then, and those albums are by far their most-Husker Du like releases since that band disintegrated. You could also combine some of the early Spectrum and Spiritualized releases to make an excellent Spacemen 3 album (I've actually experimented with this by making a playlist out of tracks from "Lazer Guided Melodies" and "Soul Kiss, Glide Divine" - surprisingly, it hangs together more coherently than "Recurring"). You could also create the perfect follow-up to "Neu!'75" by combining Harmonia's "Deluxe" with La Dussdeldorf's debut.

How about all the versions of "Hey Joe" done chronologically? Would start with the Leaves version, then Love, then Tim Rose and (of course) Jimi, down to Patti Smith's version and then Nick Cave's... I think I forgot Deep Purple's...

The post Bauhaus bands Love & Rockets,Tones On Tail, David J & the solo Murphy stuff would probably make a better collected lp than any of the individual efforts Sisters of Mercy would be the same especially if you let Red Lorry Yellow Lorry join in as well Both of these would involve a bit of g*th and I'm not sure if you want that on your show Kyuss/QOTSA/Mark Lanegan/Screaming Trees/Solomon Grundy/Purple Outside/Mad Season sorta clump together, well they do in my cd collection, I'm considering lumping in the Pearl Jam/Mother Love Bone/Temple of the Dog/Soundgarden in there to, in a musical naughty corner section You could probably do something with pre Eagles as well .OK I'll get my coat [James Gang, Poco, Buffalo Springfield, probably fit The Byrds in somehow, it's better than it sounds ,honest]

What did Tim Blake do after Gong? I can definitely see some Hillage & Allen, plus "Moerlen's Gong", maybe something Pip Pyle (Hatfields?) to try and recreate "the classic Gong lineup" (sorta.)

The Yes one could definitely work -- especially since their songs are so long, you wouldn't need a lot of them! Bob & Wailers is a good idea too, but I don't have any Bunny and not much Tosh. Purple is a possibility -- an excuse to play Tommy Bolin at least?
