I know he's not exactly an Unsung artist. And no, this isn't a genuine collaboration with Eno. But someone has posted an mp3 on the web of one of Justin Bieber's songs slowed down by 800% and, remarkably, it turns into something really quite beautiful. Check it out for yourself.

Couldn't get it to play through soundcloud, but this link worked for me. http://cdnfiles.info/static/USMILEAMBIENT.mp3 Truly majestic intro!

This is the one Sin Agog posted in the 'Pump? Got it on now and it's bloody marvellous. Never heard of paulstretching before, but I'm liking it.

Here's the original. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlYEntYv6DM Most people seem to prefer the slopwed down version, judging by the comments. It sounds like he's singing "U smell" not "U smile" U know?

I guess getting hit in the head by that bottle really changed Bieber's outlook on life. It sorta reminds me of Vangelis' score to the series Cosmos.

Isn't it odd that, when slowed down by 800%, I can listen to that track for 35 minutes and then put it back on to play again... yet at the "correct" speed, I can only take about 40 seconds before I have to switch it off.

I found exactly the opposite. 3 minutes of bland hooky pop was inoffensively meh. half an hour of unchanging majesty got a bit wearing after a while. I used to have a program called Sound Forge that could do this sort of stuff. I wish I knew where the disk was. I could have some fun with this idea. I'd like to find out if there is any truth in the rumour that Risk Astley sounds exactly like Kylie Minogue when played at twice the speed.

Thing is, I'm a huge ambient music fan. It's the perfect soundtrack for research and writing. I've got a whole shelf of albums that sound spookily similar to that Bieber-slowdown. Not to say I don't like lots of other kinds of music too, but saccharine pop without any discernible edge gets very irritating very quickly for me.

It is amazingly viable at that speed. Very trippy.

It's actually done well. By that I mean that the software used and the track chosen have worked well. I know this because I downloaded some freeware timestretching software, and I slowed down "Agadoo" by Black Lace, as much as it allowed me. That's a 500% reduction rather than an 800% reduction. http://thewholedamnworld.webs.com/aaagggggaaaaadddooooooooooooo.mp3 For some reason it only allows a relatively short sample, but you can hear: (assuming that the linkallows anyone to download this) a) The software is shit. b) even if the software had been perfect, the resultant song would have been shit. So Kudos to the guy that put this together. It's not as straightforward as it might appear.
