In mail order customer service has to be king. If you can't mail out within a couple of working days of receipt of an order then you need to tell the customer why. The best advice you can get as a small label is that being independent and beating the prevailing system nowadays demands that you try your hardest to be even more professional than the best corporations not less. Love them or hate them Amazon and iTunes set the bar pretty high. Which is why they have such a huge chunk of the market. That said I will always buy from the artist first if they offer a decent deal and decent back-end but once-bitten ....
There are artists we have all heard of playing pretty decent sized tours who only mail out orders once a week. Which is criminal now that most payments clear immediately. On the other hand there are set-ups like Marillion's which are extraordinarily well run for a one-artist store. So it can be done. If people care enough to see that it is done.
