Most of my listening comes from between the year I was born and today. Was born in '67.
I really don't care for much music from the first half of the 60s and by and large the 80s and 90s were pretty lame (80s to me were better than the 90s) but for a favorite decade it is between now and the 70s. There is some really kickass shit coming out nowadays but when its all said and done it is the 1970s that provides me with the very best listening.

talk about "generalism"...could you throw in a few ref's so we understand what you thought were "good" or "lame"....otherwise this thread is going nowhere!

Au Contrare, I think the 80s were actually the best decade for music. Sure alot of it was tacky but there was still a lively underground then...

1970's were best, absolutely.

(Doesn't everyone think the best era of music was the decade when were young, heh?)

But in this case it also happens to be true: more important subgenres flowered in that decade than in any other (metal, glam, punk, funk, reggae, disco, singer-songwriters, fusion, prog, jam bands, southern rock, outlaw country, etc.!) It was waaaaay more "eclectic" than the 1960's, which are probably over-rated (the first few years were more like the 1950's anyway.)

The 1980's is also an underrated decade (though not necessarily for mainstream music.)

Things didn't get kinda shitty til around 1995, but have gotten cooler in the last couple years (best time for music in the last 20+ years is RIGHT NOW.)

I agree... the 70s was an INCREDIBLY fruitful and eclectic decade. One theory I have about why is that people still listened to the radio then, and the radio hadn't really balkanized genres yet. I remember listening to Kasey Kasem's show and getting a bit of EVERYTHING within the space of an hour or two... rock, country, funk, novelty records... David Bowie back to back with Dolly Parton... no formula.
I remember when the seventies ended thinking 'Finally, the eighties!', but while a good decade too, in retrospect the music from that decade wasn't as warm and human and funky... even new wave and punk had pretty much blown their wad by the early eighties.
