The version of No Love Lost on the Joy Division Heart And Soul collection is not the version I recall from my youth. I remember Curtis' spoken part talking about a 'two-mirror in the hall' as opposed to the 'house of dolls' monologue on the collection. I thought there was only one recorded version of this song. Can anyone shed any light? :o)

If I'm not mistaken that's the version on the Warsaw "semi-official" CD. I think this comes from the sessions for the aborted RCA album. My memory of the background around this period is sketchy but I'm sure someone round here a bit more switched on will fill in the details.

I've definitely heard a couple of versions differentiated by that bit. is the Heart & Soul version the same as the Substance version? I had it on tape as part of the Warsaw lp some years back. & yeah i assume that was the RCA projected lp. stevo

Is the '2-way Mirror in the Hall' the Waraw lp one then? Trying to remember if I'm remembering that from the tape or the Substance version. Tape was lost several years back I think so can't check it. & I have no idea where my copy of Substance is, if I still have it. So can't check if the version on there of the track is the same as the version on the box set. Am currently thinking that the material on Substance did cover a lot of the obscurities in the JD ouevre, I think possibly including some of the RCA lp, but possibly the same songs from other recording sessions. Yes it's the Warsaw one, just had a listen to double-check. It's one of the tracks that works well without a Hannett production, great raw Stooge-y sound. Followed by the rubbish 2mph version of Transmission on my CD! For some reason I never got that Substance cd so I don't know which versions are on that.

I listened to the Warsaw cassette a lot whereas I, too, never had the Substance collection, so that'll be it. :o) Thought that Factory only ever released Hannett produced JD material, so I'm guessing the version on Heart And Soul must be the same as the one on Substance. I'll dig it out of the car and see if my eyesight is up to reading the sleevenotes!

I've always loved the version of NLL on the Warsaw LP/CD. The band reckoned at the time that they hated the keyboards on the album. However, this version of NLL is superb IMHO. The track has a Krautrock almost Neu (motorik) feel.

Here's the clarification from your local JD nerd! The "Warsaw" CD is actually a misnomer - all 11 tracks were recorded in May 1978 after they became Joy Division - these 11 comprised of the aborted RCA LP. "Interzone", "Shadowplay" and "The Drawback" (also known on some bootlegs as "All Of This For You") feature on Disc 3 of Heart & Soul. The producers were John Anderson, Bob Auger & Richard Searling. The version of "No Love Lost" that has the Ian rap of "Two-way mirror in the hall" etc is part of this collection, and officially remains unreleased. "No Love Lost" on "Heart And Soul" is taken from their first EP "An Ideal For Living", recorded in December 1977 - at the point the band changed their name from Warsaw to Joy Division. The phrase in the middle of this record - apart from the last two sentences "No Life At All In The House Of Dolls" "No Love Lost" - is taken directly from this book http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_Dolls Ian makes one censorious gesture in substituting the word "vagina" for "body" but otherwise he reads the paragraph verbatim. Later on in the book there is a paragraph headed with the words "JOY DIVISION" - this is of course where the band took their name from. It has long been accepted that the book was Ian's - but in the Joy Division documentary Bernard states the book was his - a remark which Peter Hook later in print treated with incredulity. The producer of this track is unknown - the band probably did it themselves. Hannett did not produce either of these versions - his first stab at JD was in October 78 with the tracks "Digital" and "Glass" - recorded for the double EP "Factory Sample" and also featured on Heart & Soul. "Substance" featured single A and B-sides and the two tracks on the "Earcom 2" compilation - in other words it's the "House of Dolls" version that is on "Substance". "Substance" does not include any of the RCA tracks - Heart & Soul - as mentioned above - includes 3. Hope that clears things up.

Terrific. Thanks for that, elegant chaos. Unreleased eh? I'm gonna have to dig out that Warsaw cassette and hope it's still playable if I want the No Love Lost of my youth! :o)
