In terms of trying to make a living at music, I have had quite few friends try Nashville after bands/careers have dried up.
It is not easy, some like it, do well, some hate it.
Entry level for most is through publishing, songwriting/song plugging.
If you can see it as a craft in itself or a means to an end you'll do alright.
But many rockers/folkies see their songs as an extension of themselves and have a rough time separating themselves from their songs or writing to fit a genre. Yet they can get paid well after learning the craft, live the life of a musician, and have quite a few projects going with a very diverse and serious minded musical community.
