They stumble on songwriting and vocals, some good moments but kinda a summation of what was wrong with a lot of 70's rock: plodding and generic. Hookfoot with its dual leads, better vocals, and better songs were/are the better band. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that is complete arse Budgie /Ash is like comparing can to Tangerine Dream, red & black are colours but they are very different The Allmans had twin guitars but they played as much against each other as with [well Betts & Allman did] & IIRC Lizzy have said they followed in Wishbones steps as for the vocals well I'm sure Robert Plant didn't lose any sleep, but they were hardly tuneless screamers & shouters, and stood well above many of the bands of the day & can fill a CD with best bits with more to spare so were hardly lacking a good tune or two Not quite complete arse, they did I'll admit become generic in the late 70s but from 70 to 75 I'd say they managed to carve themselves a nice individual little nook for themselves in the history of rock

Unlike Status Quo, Wishbone Ash wasn't afraid to do the tours required for the US, as a result they were able to do 1200-2500 seaters in their heyday, receive some airplay, and build a following that is still loyal even today, similar to Heep, Nektar, even Budgie.

I've been a fan of their "Locked In" album since about the time I got my drivers license in 1982. The car I inherited was equipped with an 8-track player and one of the handful of tapes I had was Locked In which means it was played to death. To this day I'm sure my friends who drove around with me smoking the evil weed and who don't know the name Wishbone Ash from Grobschnitt or May Blitz surely still recall the lyrics to Moonshine or Say Goodbye. Rest in Peace, No Water in the Well and She Was My Best Friend are also memorable and frankly wonderful softer rock classics.

Has there ever been a remaster of Wishbone 4? Always thought it sounded horrible (and I am not one to usually worry about such niceties as production). Love the first 3 (and plenty of the later ones if I am honest). Think I read somewhere that they were created to try to emulate Fleetwood Mac's success, the product of a manager or record company. If so, "The Man" sometimes got it right - 'spose Mott the Hoople and Montrose were similar strokes of lucky alchemy.

That's what I'd've said before I saw both bands, but at least live, I didn't think Andy's vocals were all that much inferior to Martin's. They have played a few reunion gigs over the years & I'm pretty sure that Martin rejoined for a while. Squid - the version of Ash that you're seeing are very good & I'd be astonished if they don't play loads of Argus even if they don't do the whole thing at the festy. The Powell version are better tho imo - they still write & record new stuff, unlike Turner's version (so far) & there's no whiff of 'tribute band', whereas I thought Turner's version did feel a little bit like a trib band with Turner fronting it love Moth

I caught MT's Wishbone Ash doing their live run through of Argus at High Voltage on Sunday. The opening to 'Time Was' was a bit wobbly, but as soon as those guitars kicked in it was all systems go. 'Blowing Free' was played out of sequence, being saved for the end when Ted Turner came onstage, at least making 2 original members in this version of the band. Bit of a latecomer to the Ash, so they are not as important to me as they are to other contributors to this forum, but I'm liking the 2 albums I've recently picked up.

Love the first 3 (and plenty of the later ones if I am honest). From what I've read elsewhere all the MCA albums have been remastered this year and have already been issued in card sleeves in Japan. These new masters were used for the recent 'Sometime World' compilation; Amazon reviewers seem to think there has been a vast improvement in sound. I guess that means yet another issue for Argus before too long...

It's all about Pilgrimage for me - one of those albums that sounds both quintesentially 70s and strangely timeless, possibly because it's almost instrumental. I reckon it's been influential on the likes of Mogwai etc as well as a load of recent revivalist bands. The bit where Valediction goes reggae gets me everytime...

I remember being the only dude in a queue stretching twice around the block outside Newcastle City Hall in late '78 that wasn't there to buy Ash tickets (Buzzcocks tickets went on sale the same day!). They were effing massive up here - one of those bands I kidded myself I didn't like at the time before later coming out, so to speak! Hookfoot were good too, mind. As were Sassafras - remember them? I penned a review for one of their albums on this very site some years ago which was quoted in a subsequent CD reissue - but attributed to Julian Cope. I wonder how the Drude felt about being associated with mid-70's twin guitar Welsh raack? thanks for the heads up on Sassafras
