oh bugger. sounds like we're going to see the "wrong" Wishbone Ash at Weyfest then. Pity, I was looking forward to that 8-(

Nah! I'm sure it'll be great and aren't they doing Argus in it's entirety?

I just think Martin Turner has been a bit cheeky in suddenly seeking to appropriate the Wishbone Ash name decades after leaving and when Andy Powell has lead the band through loads of albums and gigs since.

I think I've seen that they may be doing Argus elsewhere, but I've seen no mention of that for Weyfest. Could be though.

I expect they will - it'd be a festy crowd pleaser. If not, run onstage and poke them with sticks until they comply!

One of those footnote bands, not as distinct as Budgie, but alot of potential with some delivery, dual leads were done more distinctively by Duane and Richard, then later Gorham/Robertson.

They stumble on songwriting and vocals, some good moments but kinda a summation of what was wrong with a lot of 70's rock: plodding and generic.

Hookfoot with its dual leads, better vocals, and better songs were/are the better band.

The Martin Turner version are on at my local Rock N' Blues fest this weekend, and I am really looking forward to seeing em!

They played at the High Voltage fest last weekend, and are doing the entire Argus album at this date too.....80)

*As a footnote......There's The Rub, is probably my favourite Wishbone Ash album out of the lot.
Choc full of cracking songs like Silver Shoes, Persephone, Hometown, and containing the ace instrumental F.U.B.B. or (Fucked Up Beyond Belief)

Enjoy!

Mmmm!
Andy Powell seems to have pissed off all the former founder members to be fair Moonie.
Powell has, amongst other things, sold on the rights to a load of recordings, belonging to all past members of the band, and without any consent!
A bit naughty doncha fink?

A 1972 set turned up on Dime a couple days back. Been hoping for more from around that early since i first heard the Phoenix e.p. as bonus tracks on the mid noughties reissue of Argus. It isn't as animated as that New Orleans recording but seemed pretty decent.

Don't think I'm a big fan of the guy's voice but the music's good. I always hear a more proggy take on something somewhat reminiscent of the ballroom sound. So wondered if there was much SF influence.

Oh, I think they were more than a footnote band. I remember being the only dude in a queue stretching twice around the block outside Newcastle City Hall in late '78 that wasn't there to buy Ash tickets (Buzzcocks tickets went on sale the same day!). They were effing massive up here - one of those bands I kidded myself I didn't like at the time before later coming out, so to speak!

Hookfoot were good too, mind. As were Sassafras - remember them? I penned a review for one of their albums on this very site some years ago which was quoted in a subsequent CD reissue - but attributed to Julian Cope. I wonder how the Drude felt about being associated with mid-70's twin guitar Welsh raack?

Keep looking forward to it. You'll be guaranteed superior vocals from Ash's best lead vocalist Martin Turner; Andy Powell's vocals being gratingly nasal and Jools Holland-like in comparison - though his axemanship usually makes me forget such shortcomings. And even at 60 he looks well cool with a V!

I was in their fanclub. Had a little membership card and a badge (of course). It was run by a lady called Doreen. Seriously. We walked round to her house in Hatch End once to pick up tickets for an In Concert at the Paris Studios and she said You've just missed Andy and the boys.

Hookfoot was Caleb Quaye wasnt it, Finlay's uncle? Played with Elton John too.

I'm sure we've done this before. Somebody'll drag it back from 6 years ago now.

I have the 4th album, or I still have it but I'm not sure. I don't remember it having much of an impression on me dispute occasionally reminding me of Television although that must be just the twin guitars...
