If you're after some prog leaning extreme stuff you might like (yet) another Scando band called Ansur. Their first album "Axiom" is kinda black metal with proggy leanings - I like it, you might - but the 2nd album "The Warring Factions" is a full on extreme prog metal mess of madness even to the point of having a cheesey sax solo that actually works! They do have cookie monster vocals so buyer beware if it ain't your thing. They're annoyingly young too. In the same spiky ball on a chain park as Opeth are a band called Farmakon, which is basically a case of low budget Opeth worship and also a band called Memfis. I really like the mighty Mastodon (USA) too. A mix of stoner, sludge and thrash with a mix of clean and WAUURGH vocals and some of the most brilliant metal drumming around. The albums "Blood Mountain" and the gorgeous "Crack the Skye" may tickle your extreme prog fancy. And so, in conclusion, WAUUUUURGGHHH! Wheeeee oooooo spleeee dink dink uuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm blip blip THRANG! Wazooo!

Try their "unplugged" album Visor om Slutet if you fancy dipping your toe, or the earlier Jaktens Tid if you want the full Polka Metal (I swear I'm not making this up) experience. Also on the fun tip, try Vintersorg - either Till Fjälls or Ödemarkens Son. Or the side-project Otyg, which is much more folksy than metal - wonderful drinking songs. NB none of the above are remotely progressive! In case you couldn't work that out. Sounds good. I'm off to investigate! On the folk metal front, check out Korpiklaani. Fast, loud, songs about beer and galloping horses. Not terribly serious, but all the more fun for that. Squidling the Younger's favourite band.

I'd happily volunteer for the THRANG! role, although I'm probably more qualified for WAUUUUUUURGGHHH!

Glad to help! ps Oh yeah, another band you might like AND they have nice lady vocals as opposed to going WAUAAAAAARGH!!! are To-Mera. Two albums and an EP thus far of very proggy, often heavy but also melodic and textured metal. I likes 'em anyhoo. I recommend! Oh and a (newish) UK Black Metal band called "Fen" are pretty good in a black meets shoegazey/ambience meets prog kinda way. They have an album called "The Malediction Fields" which I like. Only prob is, the production is a bit cheap and muddy for such an expansive sound and it's the clean vocals that let the side down a bit. The growly bits are ok, but the clean vocals are a bit weedy and flat. They should really get a proper vocalist for those parts. A girl singer would be good, but as they're in a UK black metal band, they probably don't know any 8^) The music's good though!

I would love to be able to play music like that but just thinking about the amount of rehearsal and care and attention required to pull it off is jaw dropping. Free improv really is the lazy (if admirably reckless) musician's cop out ;-)
