In The Woods

I am really enjoying Omnio by In The Woods. Not as slick as Opeth but does anyone know this band's work well enough to offer some other pointers? I am not really interested in Black Metal other than a couple of Bathory records and maybe a bit of King Diamond so it more the Technical Metal / Prog stuff that would interest me. Thanks in advance.

Most of the stuff before Omnio involves a bit of screaming. That's Black Metal screaming, rather than Death Metal growling (like you get with Opeth, although you can actually understand what Mikael Åkerfeldt is saying most of the time, unlike most other gruff vocalists).

If you like Omnio, I'd recommend - instead of going backwards with In the Woods... - Weiland by Empyrium, Kveldssanger by Ulver and Light of Day, Day of Darkness by Green Carnation. The latter is a prog-metal meisterwerk featuring one epic sixty-minute track. Glorious stuff!

Thank you both for the tips. Green Carnation it is then.

I like Ulver a lot and have a lot / probably most of their records inc Kveldsjanger. I think of them as an electronica band or like something on 4AD. I really like how these Scandinavian bands are able to reinvent their way out of a musical dead end rather than repeating themselves. Admirable.

If you're up for a bit of folk metal, then how about Finntroll? Try their "unplugged" album Visor om Slutet if you fancy dipping your toe, or the earlier Jaktens Tid if you want the full Polka Metal (I swear I'm not making this up) experience.

Also on the fun tip, try Vintersorg - either Till Fjälls or Ödemarkens Son. Or the side-project Otyg, which is much more folksy than metal - wonderful drinking songs.

NB none of the above are remotely progressive! In case you couldn't work that out.

Sounds good. I'm off to investigate!

One more suggestion, if Empyrium find favour: A Sombre Dance by Estatic Fear (note the spelling).

Funny enough I did just review a BM album on Musique Machine yesterday -- something called Dead as Dreams from San Francisco. Not very original despite some good guitar flash and stuff.

Anyways I pretty much gave up on the genre for the most part. I just get sick of that pick-melting rhythm guitar and the usual story-book ghoulishness. I think the whole genre's gone the way of gangsta rap -- what used to be frightening or shocking now seems quaint.

So true. Probably why I gave up after two Bathory albums and an Emperor compilation. Law of very quickly diminishing returns. Though this In The Woods lot seem to have dug a tunnel out of the land of cliche. Much more like the Opeth records that Mooncat recommended.
