Hi all, Having seen mention of them crop up on here quite a few times (this weeks Soundtracks for example) I've always meant to explore their back catalogue. I'm quite enjoying expansive heavy stuff right now, so any recommendations on where to start with Opeth? |

Their first , Orchid , is as good a place as any i would expect , Damnation is the "prog" album , produced by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) |

I'd recommend starting with Blackwater Park. That one will give you a representative window into Opeth's darkly majestic and involving sound-world, and it's also an absolutely cracking album. They're all good, but choosing certain titles (the softer, more song-based Damnation, for example) might give the wrong impression.

| Mooncat turned me on to Opeth a few months back. Love the music but I have a bit of a problem with the sheer quantity of singing that's in that death growl style. Musically there is rarely a dull moment on any of the 7 albums I have spent any time with. Which is a pretty good strike rate. Basically they come with the same problem as Rush in that you have to embrace the Marmite aspect in some of the singing but in Opeth's case it is with the vocals pitched right down the other end of the the sonic spectrum from Geddy Lee. That said "Damnation" is just all-round gorgeous and sits nicely next to the Porc Tree releases between Stupid Dream and Fear of a Blank Planet. "Still Life" is my other big favourite so far. | |

In my opinion they've yet to make a duff album, although the earlier albums do sound like a band building towards something. There's more overt death metal stuff in the early years and the proggy, more majestic stuff is its embryonic stage. For many, the album "Blackwater Park" is where the Opeth prog-metal sound truly crystalised and, if you like that, then pretty much anything after it will appeal I'm sure. Of the latter stuff "Ghost Reveries" is justly regarded as a thing of wonder and their latest, "Watershed", sees them introducing folkier elements as well as even more experimental stuff into their sound. A truly great and consistant band to mine ears and, if you get the chance to see 'em live, do, cos they're pretty amazing. You've got a lot of treats awaiting, enjoy! |

Still Life, Blackwater Park, Reveries are all as good a point as any, personally I'd wade right in at the deep end and go for Damnation & Deliverance and just regard it as a double cd. Or go for the Roundhouse Tapes, in proper old fashioned live double metal lps style that is a fine all round intro edit changed me mind get still life and listen to Face of Melinda/Serenity Painted Death just listened to them, superb. |

| Brilliant, thanks for the recommendations! Seems like a band that you'll enjoy if you appreciate music and as i'm currently delving into darker heavier metally stuff, i'll pick something up this week. Most interested in the Roundhouse Tapes dvd as a starter. | |

And Mr S, (shamless plugment dept.) you might want a gawp at some of my pics of "Opeth: from the Cheap Seats" at their almighty and majestic gig at the Royal Albert Hall from back in April. Twas truly a most splendid thing which was being filmed for a future DVD. Cor! http://www.flickr.com/photos/russellbloor2/page7/ (Opeth pics on page 7,8 & 9)
