Les Rallizes Denudes
Jul 18, 2010, 01:02
So Phoenix Records (who don't seem to have a website) just put out two Les Rallizes Denudes CDs, "Blind Baby Has Its Mothers Eyes" and "Heavier Than a Death in the Family". The word online is (actually there are only two reviews so far) that "Death" is made up of five songs from the "Live '77" set, available in many different bootlegs, plus a stray track from 1973. Nobody seems to know what "Blind Baby" is- when/where it was recorded, etc. Some of the song titles appear on the more complete "Live '77" releases- they may or may not be different versions. One reviewer said these new CDs sound better than earlier releases.

Point being this shit's confusing. Does anyone know anything about this band, or what specifically these new releases are? Has anyone bought them, listened to them, and compared them with the others? Should I buy these two new CDs or try to find the older "Live '77"? Somebody must be able to help here. Right?

I bought them both and - for what they are - they sound terrific.
Julian has Heavier than a Death in the Family ranked #3 in his Japrocksampler and Blind Baby at #12. I've had mp3 files of both albums for ages but these new Phoenix issues sound really good and are an improvement if only slightly. If I'm not mistaken Phoenix is formerly Fallout formerly Radioactive and are quasi-legit grey marketeers known for needle-drops. I own many Fallout/Radioactivr/Phoenix releases and have no complaints.

JC seems to completely ignore the existence of '77 Live, but that's clearly the one to get. Two discs of bludgeoning beauty. You feel like you've just been electrocuted after listening to it.

1) '77 Live
2) Mizutani (this starts off with three or four unspeakably gorgeous Candy Says's, before moving onto a sort of Japblenderized version of European Son and Sister Ray)
3) Flightless Bird
4) Cradle Saloon '78
5) For their '80s performances, maybe dip in and out of the 6-disc set Double Heads

If I ever die of an overdose, I'm gonna make sure Enter The Mirror is blaring at full volume on the stereo in the background.

This site is the most thorough info I've come across -- too bad it's in a mix of Japanese, French and English!!

http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~ubud/Rallizes.list.html

You are correct about the provenance of "Heavier." "Live 77" is the more complete version of the same show, though it's good in either format.

I believe "Blind Baby" was recorded in a studio (it's got stereo panning and most of their stuff is pure mono), possibly in France, probably in the late 1980's. It's another one of the absolute best LRD.

These are two excellent starting places (also the "Flightless Bird" comp.)

But from what I've heard there is no such thing as a "clean" LRD recording (quality ranges from "decent" to "really bad" -- partly because Mizutani loves hisses and hums and hates studios), and it's impossible to track down when/where everything comes from, different albums overlap, almost none come out on legit labels -- I think EVERY LRD release is actually a bootleg!

But that's the trip. You will never get to the bottom of LRD!! But enjoy the ride.

Quoted for truth. '77 live is also known as 'Le Mars 12 A Tachikawa'. Available as a 'bootleg' (pretty much everything is with this band), from a French label called 'Over Level'... Attainable from Forced Exposure last I checked. Heavier Than A Death is 5 tracks from that set, completely out of sequence, inexplicably bundled together with 'People Can Choose', a recording from '73 that usually goes under the (much better) name of 'Field of Artificial Flowers', which, although great, doesn't gel all that well with the '77 material in my opinion.

For the record, I would make a point of NOT supporting Phoenix at fucking all. They have scuppered more legit & thorough remastered reissues of releases in the past. Somewhat related, Tiliqua records of Japan have delayed their archival boxset reissue of Voice Records/Brast Burn/Karuna Kyhal material because of the provenance of the Phoenix boots. A crying shame.

Yeah, that's the one label I avoid for "ethical" reasons! They don't deserve your money.

(Though in this case, it's not as if LRD makes money from any of their releases anyway. Never signed a contract with anyone as far as I know. Though I wouldn't be shocked if Mizutani was actually behind some of the "bootlegs" in some fashion. "Flightless Bird" is available at HH merchandiser, does that mean it's Julian's "bootleg" or does he have a way of contacting Mizutani??)

The supermystery continues: last speculation I heard was that Mizutani had moved to France and retired from music (to paint or something??) I don't believe he's been officially seen anywhere since about 1997 or 1998. (But the stream of bootlegs only increased after that, and a lot of them seemt to come from Europe . . . . hnmmmmmmmm??????)

Has anyone figured out how to pronounce their name so I can namedrop them in regular conversation without being stared at blankly until they figure out who I'm talking about?

I asked around a few years ago, and the consensus seems to be that there is no consensus. It's a made-up French phrase pronounced with a Japanese accent. I don't think Mizutani ever announced the name of the group from the stage did he? (Not that I have ever heard?) That would be the definitive way to find out.

So just do your best impersonation of French pronounciation with a Japanese accent, ha ha!!

PS - anyone know if that other crazy guitar player's name is pronounced SONNY "SHARE-ock" or SONNY "shuh-ROCK"? I've heard it both ways.

Joe Foster was pretty vocal a few years back about not being able to release a legit Farewell Alderbaraan from mastertapes thanks to the needledrop Radioactive version.
Wish he had done anyway. I think he has brought out other cds of lps that are out in other versions. Can remember reading a review in Record Collector mentioning this about Proud Mary by Solomon Burke.

Incidentally word came out on another list that the PR for Radioactive/Fallout etc was none other than Shindig's John Mills and it was a complete conflict of interest on his behalf. Especially considering his psychedelic column in Record collector used to seem to be mainly records from that family of labels. I don't really rate him as a writer and have wished that they'd get somebody with better style to review psych material.
Also heard that he was PR for Jawbone books who put out the John Einarson Forever Changes book so have been hoping since that Jawbone isn't another branch of the Radioactive umbrella.

There are a number of live sets up on Dime
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-browse.php?search=%2Brallizes+%2BDenudes&cat=0
(not sure if that works to take you to correct point. If not, once you get onto the site press button saying Torrents and you get a menu with Search on.)

including a mid 80s video
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=258017

I wouldn't buy Radioactive/FallOut if I could avoid it. I think Erebus was also part of the same umbrella group.
Sunbeam was created by one of the original Radioactive team being frustrated/disgusted about money concerning the reissue of C.O.B.'s Moyshe McStiff. Far as I have it, he'd been trying to set it up with royalties going to the group members and it was released without. So he took it and set up Sunbeam.
Sunbeam remained advertised on the same umbrella page advert in Record collector as Radioactive for a while, but I think it's separate now. The Bevis Frond also has a label that seems to be part of the same umbrella. You'd certainly see the label grouped in the same page sized adverts.
