I'd gotten it into my head it was my aunty Sue, who'd been and seen Take That, on their last tour. Thinking about it, now... I think she may have been rocking up in row 258, block 17 at U2's 'gig'. Sorry, Supercat.

I thought ""Patience" was a top, top tune.

But Robbie? Bleee.

Wonder what this means for his 5 album umpty billion deal he was crowing about a few years ago?

It was all such 'nothing' music his stuff. In fact, I put down Robbie Williams' period as a big selling artist down to the sort of mass hysteria and delusion that gave us the gnashing and wailing following Princess Di's death. It was like... people had to like him.

I remember being at a party once and a few people were saying how much they were looking forward to seeing 'Robbie'. They asked me if I liked him, and being reasonably polite, I didn't say "I think he's an utter twunt and his music is rancid arse-flesh", I just said "He's not really my thing and I'm not really a fan.". The response was genuinelly along the lines of...

"HOW?! HOW can you NOT like Robbie?"

..as if I'd just announced I like seal-clubbing and eating babies at weekend.

Utterly bizarre!

It is a weird thing that isn't it? The answer is to offer to play them "the sort of thing I listen to". A few seconds of Merzbow, Trout Mask or the like usually settles it.

I found an mp3 of a concert I was at that John Peel introduced. Masonna screamed through a microphone through a million effects pedals for ten minutes making a hellish Merzbow-esque noise and ending up bleeding. Afterwards Peel says (as I remember, not at home to listen at the mo),

"Marvellous. Some say the Take That influence is too obviuos but I liked it"

How us hipsters laughed.

I have to admit, I like Robbie Williams.

I like the way he tries doing different things, from pop to swing to electronica. Not all of it has been a commercial success, and if he hadn't been the pop icon that he is, they'd have been even less of a commercial success, but he's grown and changed. I can't see any other singer from his genre experimenting in the way he has.
