AC Acoustics - Understanding Music
Jul 15, 2010, 02:08
I stopped listening to "pop" music sometime in the 90s when brit pop became too noxious for me to handle and all my fave bands had either broke up,killed themselves or sold out (weatherall remixes etc). I descended into the mad happy world of obscure u.s. folk, cuban guitar, african stuff etc - i left brixton, moved to rural essex and took up the claw hammer banjo. I crawled out of this music world about 10 yrs later determined to reconnect with my poprock youth before i totally disapeared up my own ass. Anyway, to get to the point,I occasionally discover a band that everyone else seems to have heard of but mean nothing to me due to my time off the pop radar. One of these bands is the AC Acoustics who have had their second album Understanding Music re-released for some reason. I havent done too much research (same label as spacemen 3 ? - i was a loop fan and sm3 where pseuds!). Its one of the most beautiful albums i've heard in a while and seems to hit the right places in me without triggering a "oh they're just trying to sound like 'that band'!" reaction, tho they are derivative in places (the usual suspects - djnr, mbv, tfc, jamc etc) but also really unique in others, and an overall sound that I've found quite affecting for some reason. I've listened to their earlier and later stuff but nothing matches this album in my opinion. I think they broke up around '03 ish. Are there any old fans out there that could enlighten me a bit about them ? How where they considered at the time, what were they like live etc ? why did they stop ? cheers.
