Anyone have this on DVD? My old VHS, recorded off of C4 back in the 80s, has disintegrated.

I used to have the Alphabet Street set filmed at a Rotterdam show on VHS that was recorded from a TV broadcast, but lent it to a friend, about five years ago. And also still have a Purple Rain Tour VHS tape. You want to borrow that?

I really liked the Parade / Under The Cherry Moon band which was a sort of collision of Ellington, Sly & James Brown. That Bobby Z was an amazingly strong drummer to drive a band of that size and keep everyone honest. Even Prince kept a lid on the noodling. The Purple era show didn't do as much for me though would love to have seen them somewhere small-ish.

I've got a Prince concert on VHS, taped off the telly back then, but without digging it out I couldn't say where it was filmed. Haven't got a VCR set up at the moment to check, but if anyone has the facilities to put it onto DVD then I'll lend it them.

I used to love the one that opens with the line: Hello Syracuse and the World, my name is Prince and I've come to play with you It was on Channel 5 video - in the days before DVD and Channel 5 telly

It's the one where they audience sing Happy Birthday to him and has a killer version of "Mutiny" from vastly under-rated and unsung The Family album. If at any point you are able and happy to exhume it that would be grand. Prince's "people" seem to ripping everything down that they can find on line but this is a clip that is (as I write) still on youtube .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kFp6TlnxHc IB

Well it probably is but it's been a long time since I've watched it, so I couldn't say for sure, Ian. I've just checked my video list to see what else was on that tape and includes things like Panic (The Smiths) and Human (off Wogan!) and as they're from 1986, this could well be what you are looking for. Also on that tape if anyone is interested in converting this to DVD is the ITV show The Way We Were which included lots of punk/new wave stuff from So It Goes, What's On, etc., though obviously I would want this tape back. Tracklisting below... SEX PISTOLS - ANARCHY IN THE UK ELVIS COSTELLO - ALISON BUZZCOCKS - WHAT DO I GET JOHN COOPER CLARKE - DAILY EXPRESS IGGY POP - INTERVIEW/THE PASSENGER WRECKLESS ERIC - WHOLE WIDE WORLD IAN DURY - REQUIEM/LORD’S PRAYER PENETRATION - DON’T DICTATE BLONDIE - THE FALL - PSYCHOMAFIA/INDUSTRIAL ESTATE THE JAM - IN THE CITY/BRICKS & MORTAR JORDON - INTERVIEW TOM ROBINSON BAND - GLAD TO BE GAY JOHNNY THUNDER - INTERVIEW ELVIS COSTELLO - WATCHING THE DETECTIVES XTC - NEON SHUFFLE JONATHON RICHMAN - INTERVIEW NICK LOWE - SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEE’S - CHERRY VANILLA - INTERVIEW MAGAZINE - MOTORCADE DEVO - INTERVIEW THE CLASH - WHAT’S MY NAME/GARAGELAND POLY STYRENE - INTERVIEW SHAM 69 - ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES JOY DIVISION - SHADOWPLAY

Ha! It's a genius record. Essentially it serves as the prototype for both "ATWIAD" and "Parade" and the Claire Fisher arrangements are fantastic. But I guess you have to love that overblown camp-funk-psych weirdness that he was into at that time. I know it is an aquired taste! To my ears that Prince era stands next to the best and strangest records of Clinton, Bootsy and Sly.

To my ears that Prince era stands next to the best and strangest records of Clinton, Bootsy and Sly. I picked it up in Aberdeen just after Sinead had a hit with 'Nothing Compares 2U' and was left feeling let down, I was under the impression that it was a Prince record in all but name, but to my ears it had a bunch of sub Prince plodding backing tracks and a weedy singer who IIRC moaned a lot.It survived a couple of cullings but finally went to the great charity shop in the sky, and I can't say that being reminded of it makes me want to hear it again, it's one plus point was it was better than The Time [ I think that's what they were called] who had a Prince connection and were truly dire in only the way something dire in the 80s could be. I'll bet you love them too ;-) Agree about Parade, his finest moment by a country mile IMHO way better than the admittedly rather fantastic but darling of the critics Sign Of The Times
